How to Use a Troubling Thought as a Resource

Clients come to me with a desire to quiet their minds. We all have loops of thoughts, words and phrases that cycle in our busy minds throughout the day.

Most of these thoughts are helpful and propelling, but some are not resourceful. Using a troubling thought as a resource is a good technique to learn.

Learning how to change a troubling thought into a resource is easy if you follow these steps.

Try this:

  1. Breathe in to the count of 8, hold for 8 and exhale to your internal count of 16.
  2. Repeat 3 times and return to your normal breathing, keeping an awareness of your breath.
  3. Feel the relaxing effect and get yourself into a comfortable position.
  4. Think about your ?troubling thought?. Be specific.
  5. Ask yourself if there?s anything useful about it.
  6. Changing it requires understanding how to calm yourself and being very good at staying in the present tense, the now.
  7. Whenever you have the thought, don?t resist it, just pay attention to where you are, what you?re doing and all the tiny details of the moment.

Use these types of thoughts to strengthen your techniques.
