AP sources: Timberwolves making run at Pau Gasol

(AP) ? The Minnesota Timberwolves are trying hard to land Pau Gasol.

If they have to part with the highest draft choice in franchise history after just one season, the Wolves appear ready to do it.

That much became clear leading up to the NBA draft on Thursday, when Minnesota offered Derrick Williams in hopes of landing the second pick from the Charlotte Bobcats to help get Gasol from the Los Angeles Lakers, two people with knowledge of the discussions told The Associated Press.

The people requested anonymity because the talks were meant to remain private. The deal never came together before the draft began, and the Bobcats stayed at No. 2 and took Kentucky forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.

The Timberwolves are expected to continue their pursuit of Gasol in hopes of putting him with fellow Spaniard Ricky Rubio and Kevin Love on a revamped roster aimed at returning the team to the playoffs for the first time since 2004.

The Wolves' interest in Gasol has long been rumored, with the highly skilled big man considered an ideal fit for coach Rick Adelman's corner offense, and the kind of playoff-tested veteran needed on one of the youngest rosters in the NBA. He's close friends with Rubio, the Wolves' superb young point guard who is recovering from a torn ACL and hopes to be ready early next season.

Gasol has teamed with Kobe Bryant to win two titles in Los Angeles, but always seemed to catch the brunt of the criticism when things went wrong.

That happened again this year when he averaged just 12.5 points along with 9.5 rebounds in the playoffs, and the Lakers were eliminated in the second round by the younger, quicker Oklahoma City Thunder. He often appeared to get lost in the shuffle while Bryant and Andrew Bynum got most of the touches on offense.

He was the subject of trade rumors all season, starting before it began when Commissioner David Stern, operating as owner of the New Orleans Hornets, nixed a deal that would have sent Gasol to Houston as part of a package for Chris Paul to the Lakers.

"It has been a crazy year and a lot to deal with. ... Unfortunately, we had tough losses and things didn't really go our way for the most part," the four-time All-Star said at the end of the season. "You just have to regroup and digest this loss and this season, and learn from it and move on."

Gasol is due to make more than $38 million over the next two seasons, an enormous sum that the salary cap-strapped Lakers might have difficulty footing under the harsher luxury tax penalties scheduled to kick in in 2013.

Love's max contract extension kicks in next season, making him the only Timberwolves player who is expected to be on the roster next season making more than $4.6 million. If the Wolves buy out Martell Webster and decline to tender qualifying offers to Michael Beasley and Anthony Randolph, as expected, they should have plenty of cap room for Gasol.

But if they want to bring him in to play alongside Love in the frontcourt, it likely will come at a hefty price. Offering Williams, the second overall pick last season who showed promise and inconsistency in his rookie year, means the Wolves would be giving up on him after just one season. The 21-year-old Williams has plenty of potential to grow into the star that many projected when he entered the draft after his sophomore season at Arizona.

Gasol will turn 32 next week and played nearly 39,000 minutes in his career, raising the question if he has enough gas left in the tank to help turn the Timberwolves into a legitimate contender.

Williams knows the Wolves tried to deal him, but it's unclear how he will respond if he's still on the team at the start of training camp.

He averaged 8.8 points and 4.7 rebounds and was the only Timberwolves player to play in all 66 games last season. Williams had several big games during an inconsistent season, which included participating in the slam dunk contest during All-Star weekend. He scored 27 points in 27 minutes in a win over the Clippers in Los Angeles on Feb. 28 and had 27 points and eight boards in a loss at Denver on April 11.

But the 66-year-old Adelman has been pushing for the franchise to add more veterans, and he grew impatient at times with Williams last season.

Williams did most of his damage while playing power forward, which is the same position played by Love, who blossomed last year into a surprising MVP contender. With Love playing so many minutes at power forward, the Timberwolves were hoping Williams could drop some weight this summer to help him become quick enough to play small forward for the majority of the time.

Earlier this week, Kahn said Williams was already down to 233 pounds, with a personal goal of 225.

"I think the most important fact about Derrick to me is that he turned 21 last month. He's still very, very young," Kahn said Wednesday. "This is a very important summer for him to demonstrate if he's serious about his craft, his occupation, that he's serious about himself. This is the offseason. I challenged him in his exit interview, and I'm eager to see the results of this summer."

Kahn declined to list Williams with Rubio and Love as "untouchable" players when the team considers trades this summer.

"We have two untouchables," Kahn said. "That doesn't mean everyone else will be traded this summer. We just don't know."

The Truth About Bats: Natural Pest Control

Do you have a fear of bats? Bats should be considered human allies, rather than the subject of persecution from exaggerated fear. To learn the truth about bats, their value in pest control, and how installing a bat house benefits you, read on?

In the U.S. alone tens of thousands of illnesses (and deaths) are reported each year from diseases spread by insect vectors. West Nile Virus (WNV) and Encephalitis are two diseases spread by mosquitoes that can affect humans, pets, livestock, and wild animals. According to the December 2011 report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), California leads the U.S. with 154 reported WNV cases, resulting in 8 deaths. Bat rabies accounts for approximately one human death per year in the entire U.S.

Bats can be valuable allies as Nature?s insect pest control. First, let?s dispel a few myths about bats. They are not birds, nor are they rodents. They are fur-bearing, milk producing mammals, like us. They play a key role in maintaining balance in our eco-system by keeping insect populations in check. They are nature?s most effective, least expensive, natural pest control. One bat house, that holds 100 Little Brown bats, can potentially consume 100,000 insects per hour! Mexican Free-tailed bats eat hundreds of tons of moth pests (weekly) and a colony of Big Browns can consume tens of millions of cucumber beetle larva in a season. One million bats can consume almost 7 tons of insects in a year. Bats can save farmers and foresters billions of dollars annually. Not only do they deserve our protection, urgent and effective efforts towards their conservation is critical, not only for the bats, but for our own livelihood.

Why is this matter so urgent? Bats now rank as North America?s most rapidly declining and endangered land mammal. A new disease has entered their world, killing more than one million bats in just five years. The disease is White-nose Syndrome (WNS), a fungus that has destroyed entire populations of bats living in one area. People cannot contract the disease, but can spread it by contaminating areas where the animals live. WNS is now documented in 19 U.S. states and 4 Canadian provinces, and spreading. Currently, 25 species of hibernating bats in the U.S. are faced with possible extinction. Although bats are long-lived, they only have one pup a year. Scientists predict it is unlikely that their populations will recover.

How can we help? Educate others about the benefits of bats and install a bat house for a natural solution to insect pest control. Encourage legislators to allocate funding towards understanding and fighting WNS. Adhere to cave advisories and closures to help prevent transmission of WNS. Encourage bats to live in your own yard/garden (and not in your attic) by putting up a bat house. Make sure all bats have vacated the building before installing screens to prevent them from entering. Eliminate use of toxic pesticides with organic pest control. Pesticides kill many wild animals, including birds and bats directly and indirectly by consuming the seeds or insects that come into contact with the pesticide. Bat houses are just one of many natural pest control solutions available today. By recognizing that these wild animals as a valuable and vital component in the eco-system serving as Nature?s solution to insect pest control, and that learning how to coexist rather than fear them, is a healthier perspective. Note: Bats are wild animals and it is illegal and unethical to keep them in captivity. If you find a bat on the ground, do not touch it and notify a local wildlife rehabilitator immediately.

Why Landmark Forum Is a Worthwhile Experience

Landmark education is one of the most amazing personal development programs you will ever come across. Since its inception, a number of people have participated in Landmark forum and there has been very excellent feedback from almost all participants of the Landmark forum. This feedback has proved the authenticity of Landmark education in spite of criticism from time to time. The seminars that are offered at Landmark education are beneficial for everyone who takes part, adding value to their personal and corporate lives. It does not matter the cultural background, value of this education fits into every specific context; little wonder the program has gained lots of popularity in many countries across the world.

If there is one thing that people want, it is a practical approach in dealing with the issues that they face in their lives. There are a lot of personal development programs that look very juicy and attractive but do not offer any practical help to seekers and leaves them still searching for a solution. The last thing you want is to get a lot of theories with no specific practical steps to apply directly to your life. The gist of Landmark education is the practical approach of the seminars and the sessions in general. There are a number of meaningful lessons that participants draw from the Landmark forum that literally transform their lives and become their life lessons.

When looking for a personal development program, it is very important to research and know what effect it has had on previous participants. Do not go for any personal development program you come across just for the sake of it. Care enough to know what previous participants have to say about the program. Were they impacted in some specific areas of their lives? Were their expectations met? For instance, as you look to enroll into Landmark education, read some feedback from previous participants and see for yourself what they have to say. It will amaze you to know what Landmark education has done for countless people across the globe. The Internet is awash with feedback from very satisfied participants of Landmark forum who are over the moon with joy as they utilize the principles and lessons learnt from Landmark education.

One distinct aspect of Landmark education is the long term impact of the lessons and skills learnt. If you have been wallowing in confusion as to what your goals are and how to achieve them, you will find the Landmark forum literally invaluable. If you have been struggling in the area of personal excellence, you will find just the right motivation for you to excel in different areas of your life. Activist's death highlights 'cruelty' of 'fitness for work' rules ...

Anti-cuts campaigners have paid tribute to a disabled activist who died last week after fighting for two years against the injustice of the government?s ?fitness for work? assessment regime.

Karen Sherlock died on 8 June, just a fortnight after she was told that she would be eligible once again to receive out-of-work disability benefits.

Campaigners say her death is further evidence that the much-criticised work capability assessment (WCA) is unfit for purpose and is causing thousands of disabled people anxiety and hardship, is exacerbating their ill-health and even contributing to some deaths.

Sherlock had several long-term health conditions, including diabetes and a heart condition, was about to start dialysis and was awaiting a kidney transplant, and experienced regular pain, exhaustion, vomiting and incontinence.

In a blog written in April, she described how her employment and support allowance (ESA) had been stopped, and accused the government of ?stripping the most vulnerable of the essential benefits they need?.

She added: ?Just throw them on the scrapheap. Don?t worry if they can?t feed themselves or heat their homes, or pay for taxis to take them places because they cannot walk anywhere.? No, that doesn?t matter, they are leeches on society.?

Sherlock had been forced out of her NHS job in 2008 because of serious ill-health, and although she was found eligible for ESA ? the replacement for incapacity benefit ? she was placed in the work-related activity group, for those expected eventually to return to employment.

She was one of the tens of thousands of disabled people whose contributory form of ESA was stopped from 30 April this year, because of the new one-year time-limit introduced under the coalition?s Welfare Reform Act.

She only found out days before she died that her latest appeal had successfully placed her in the support group for those not expected to carry out any work-related activity, and therefore would no longer be affected by the time-limit.

The disabled activist and blogger Kaliya Franklin has pieced together Sherlock?s experiences from emails and blogs she posted between October 2010 and May 2012.

She wrote in a blog that Sherlock had been filled with ?confusion, fear and anxiety? because of the assessments, appeals and administrative foul-ups she was put through, and that she felt ?caught up in the mill, frustrated, angry and insignificant?.

In a blog on the New Statesman website, fellow disabled activist and blogger Sue Marsh, a friend of Sherlock?s, said she had ?battled just to survive? and faced ?endless pressure, the judgement of society, the fear of destitution, the exhaustion of constant assessments and endless forms?.

Marsh has focused her campaigning efforts on the government?s new one-year time limit, which she describes as ?an emblem of cruelty that really did cross the line of decency?.

She said Sherlock had been ?terrified of the DWP, almost paralysed by a fear that if she spoke out, they would treat her even more harshly. But she spoke out regardless.?

Asked whether Sherlock?s death demonstrated that too many ill and disabled people were being forced through a continuing cycle of assessments and appeals when clearly not fit for work, a spokesman for Chris Grayling, the Conservative minister for employment, said: ?I really don?t think it?s appropriate to comment on an individual case like this.?

House panel OKs bill expanding rewards program

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A House panel on Wednesday approved legislation that would expand the State Department's rewards for justice program to target the world's most serious human rights abusers, with African warlord Joseph Kony a top target.

In a rare moment of bipartisanship, Democratic and Republican members of the Foreign Affairs Committee adopted a bill that would authorize operations for the State Department and speed up the process for U.S. arms sales overseas. The voice vote approval reflected the desire of both parties to complete such a broad-based State Department bill for the first time in a decade. The measure avoids the politically charged fights over U.S. aid to foreign nations and focuses on funds for the department, the Broadcasting Board of Governors and the Peace Corps.

One provision that has widespread support, including the backing of the department, is expansion of the rewards program.

The program, established in 1984, gives the secretary of state the authority to offer a reward for information leading to the arrest or conviction of anyone who plans, commits or attempts international terrorist acts. The amount of the reward would be at the secretary's discretion. The bill would expand that authority to allow the State Department to publicize and pay rewards for information about individuals involved in transnational organized crime or foreign nationals wanted by any international criminal tribunal for war crimes or genocide.

Kony and his ruthless guerrilla group, the Lord's Resistance Army, are responsible for a 26-year campaign of terror in Central Africa that has been marked by child abductions and widespread killings. The United States designated the Lord's Resistance Army a terrorist organization in 2001. Kony is wanted by the International Criminal Court for heinous attacks in multiple countries.

Last year, President Barack Obama dispatched 100 U.S. troops ? mostly Army Special Forces ? to Central Africa to advise regional forces in their hunt for Kony, a military move that received strong bipartisan support.

Calling Kony "the sadistic head of the LRA," Rep. Ed Royce, R-Calif., said his capture is a top goal and U.S. military advisers consider a reward offer critical to their success.

"They need this tool in the field now," Royce said. Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., said it would help get Kony "brought to justice."

In nearly 30 years, the United States has paid more than $100 million to more than 70 people for information about terrorism.

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry, D-Mass., has introduced similar legislation in the Senate.

Rep. Ilena Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., chairwoman of the House committee, said the approval of the bill strengthens the panel's role in oversight of the department. Rep. Howard Berman of California, the panel's senior Democrat, said that if the committee wants to be taken seriously, it must produce legislation that the full House can back.

Run fast, drink tea: Abs Diet 3 weeks in

When I was on my travels in the lovely St Lucia, I embarked on some light pool time reading - the abs diet! Luckily this was the perfect time to read it - no other distractions (apart from when the next mango daiquiri was going to arrive) meant I could read it from top to bottom and really discover how potentially brilliant a book it actually was.

So, I started the diet three weeks ago today, and although I'm going to post properly once the 6 weeks is up, it's nice to recap half way in.

I felt and actually SAW results almost instantly - within a week I'd lost half an inch from my waist and could see actual improvements in my 'one pack'. I also loved the eating plan from the get go and feel every day I am getting enough food and enough nutrients to never feel hungry, deprived or like my body isn't getting what it needs.

I explained briefly what the premiss is a few posts ago, and am finding this style of eating pretty much spot on for me. It is (dare I say it) perfect.

A typical day looks like this:
Breakfast of a smoothie made from berries, milk, protein powder and add in's such as flax
A mid morning snack of natural yogurt and an apple
Lunch of salad with sliced turkey and chopped veggies, followed by an orange
Afternoon snackies of an ounce of almonds and strawberries
Post workout snack of a protein shake blended with milk and berries
Evening meal of meatballs made with lamb, a homemade tomato sauce and whole wheat pasta.
Throughout the day - shed loads of water and tea :)

I'm hitting my 5 a day without evening trying and my food feels so much more balanced. I no longer really think about having something sweet after my evening meal - it's not part of the plan (unless it's my cheat meal!) so I don't even crave it. Yes - on to the cheat meal! Once a week, the plan suggests you eat literally anything you fancy for one meal. It apparently trips your metabolism into working harder for that one meal, and of course is a bloody great big treat :) So, for that meal I have been having whatever I fancy along with some sort of dessert and a few drinkies.

I can't wait to see how I feel in the next few weeks. I am beginning to wonder, why on earth did I not think of this before??

Google brings incremental app updates, added encryption measures to Android

Google has just announced a new feature for Google Play that's sure to please anyone who's sat though an app update that never seemed to end. It now offers what it calls "Smart App Updates," which will let developers provide incremental updates to apps instead of forcing people to download a whole new APK for every minor update. On average, Google says those should be about a third the size of typical updates. What's more, the company has also announced that it's bringing added encryption measures to Android, which will let paid apps be encrypted with a device-specific key that makes them harder to rip and share. Both features will supported on Android devices running Gingerbread or above.

Check out our full coverage of Google I/O 2012's opening keynote at our event hub!

In Israel, a push to learn the language of 'the enemy'

The current decline in the study of Arabic in Israeli schools could compromise coexistence efforts and the military's ability to gather intelligence. But one program is countering that trend.

By Ben Lynfield,?Correspondent / June 26, 2012

Israeli Romy Achituv sticks a sticker with Arabic writing on a public sign in Jerusalem in 2009. Most street and public signs in Israel are written in three languages: Hebrew, Arabic and English. But in many of Jerusalem's neighbourhoods, the Arabic writing has been pasted over with Israeli ultranationalist stickers. Achituv is restoring the Arabic on this vandalized sign.

A few minutes after fielding questions from Mr. Shihada and each other about how many siblings they have and where their parents work, the class of Israeli youngsters is enthusiastically singing the words of an ancient Arabic folk song about harvesting olives. ''God, bless the olive trees. The olives of my land are especially delicious. They give fine oil. All the world wants to eat them,'' the two dozen children intone.

The singing is a major achievement in a land where Arabic and its speakers are often viewed with suspicion and where instruction of the language is widely seen as being in decline, with a shortage of qualified teachers and few students choosing to take it for their high school matriculation exam.

Despite Arabic being an official Israeli language alongside Hebrew, most Israelis can neither read nor speak it competently, if at all ? a situation that critics of government education policy say hinders coexistence prospects with Israel's sizable Arab minority and could hinder the military's intelligence-gathering efforts.

Israel is only beginning to come to terms with the problem.

'Many Arabic teachers don't know how to speak or write Arabic'

The Israel Academy of Sciences recently issued a report detailing Arabic teaching deficiencies, concluding among other things that making the language a matriculation requirement is necessary to redress the situation. The academy's report said only a few Arabic teachers were native speakers.

''Teaching of Arabic is done mostly in Hebrew, including in teacher training programs, and the result is that many of the Arabic teachers do not know how to speak or write Arabic,'' the report said.

''This situation is improper and abnormal,'' says Yaron Friedman, who teaches Arabic at the?Technion Institute in Haifa. ''What is being done is not enough,'' he says.

He warns that Israel is raising a young generation that is ''detached from the Middle East'' both linguistically and culturally.

The Ministry of Education declined to respond directly to the criticisms but says the subject of Arabic instruction ''is one undergoing constant development.'' It added that the ministry is ''striving'' to make the language a requirement for matriculation in the future but did not give a date.

The military, meanwhile, is also worried about the troubled state of Arabic instruction, fearing it will not have a large enough pool for future intelligence officers. ''The army has identified in recent years a severe problem in the level of exposure of pupils to Arabic and we have seen that among those who learned, the knowledge level is not high to put it mildly,'' an intelligence officer who deals with Arabic instruction told Ynet news.

PFT: Fujita accuses NFL of 'smear campaign'

89545031_display_imageGetty Images

A year after nearly making it to the playoffs following a total of six wins in three seasons, the planets aligned for another disastrous season in St. Louis.? And a disaster indeed unfolded, in the form of a 2-14 record.

The finish resulted in owner Stan Kroenke cleaning most of the house, firing G.M. Billy Devaney and coach Steve Spagnuolo.? On Saturday, Devaney joined Doug Farrar and Rob Rang of KJR radio (via NFL.com), and Devaney offered up a wide variety of excuses for the team?s re-collapse in 2011.

The laundry list of lamentations for losing include:? (1) the team went up for sale as soon as Devaney and Spagnuolo were hired; (2) the team had ?an old roster,? a ?really old roster?; (3) there were ?some guaranteed contracts on there that we have to live with?; (4) the lineup was essentially ?Steven Jackson and the Pips,? and Devaney said he ?probably would have been happier with some of the Pips? (oh . . . snap); (5) the team had to make tough and unpopular decisions regarding receiver Torry Holt and Orlando Pace; (6) there wasn?t much money being put into a team that was for sale; (7) after a successful season, offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur left to coach the Browns; (8) a ton of injuries in 2011; (9) no offseason in 2011; and (10) a ?ridiculous? schedule in 2011.

?It was just one thing after another,? Devaney said.? ?I could tell in training camp ? I mean early on, I don?t even know if we started playing a preseason game ? things just, especially on offense, things just looked really . . . nobody looked comfortable.?

Then came the regular season, with an opening slate of games against the Eagles, Giants, Ravens, Redskins, Packers, Cowboys, and Saints.? But for a postseason-altering upset win over the Saints (if New Orleans had won, the Saints would have hosted the 49ers in the divisional round), the Rams would have started the year 0-8.

?I mean, we were hoping, and this is ? we?re trying to be optimistic ? we were hoping at the halfway point, we may have had two wins,? Devaney said.? ?We thought if we could scratch out two wins, the back end of the schedule, we could win a couple of more games.? Well, I don?t know if we won any.? We may have won one, but by that time, the roster was decimated.? We were working corners out on Tuesday and they were lining up and starting for us on Sunday. . . .? Five or six of those guys, I couldn?t even tell you who they were.?

The points are all valid, but the lesson for other General Managers and coaches is that, when a team is facing that kind of adversity, it?s important to manage expectations, both inside and outside the building.

It didn?t work internally, or Devaney and Spagnuolo would have gotten another chance to preside over another stunning turnaround.

Virgin America Crew to Octomom: LOL You Suck!

Nadya Suleman recently endured some turbulence in the non-literal sense on a Virgin America flight, enduring taunts and poor treatment from the crew.

According to Octomom herself, at least.

Her manager, Gina Rodriguez, says they were en route from LA to NYC on Tuesday to promote some Octomom porn when the airline made their lives hell.

Hot Nadya Suleman

Rodriguez says they were forced to change seats, never got any beverages, overheard the crew making jokes about/laughing at Octomom and more.

On top of general rudeness, she also says Octomom was kicked out of the bathroom by a flight attendant for no apparent reason ... because that happens.

Nadya filed a complaint with the airline, telling TMZ, "I was shocked at how poorly they treated me on the plane" and "will never fly Virgin America again."

Rodriguez adds that she and Nadya Suleman confronted the flight attendants about their behavior and one said in response, "I know who you guys are!"

That's as good an excuse as any.

Negotiators closing in on student loan deal

(AP) ? Congressional bargainers appeared to be closing in on a compromise that would head off a July 1 doubling of interest rates on federal loans to 7.4 million college students and end an election-year battle between President Barack Obama and Congress.

Senate aides from both parties said Friday the two sides were moving toward a deal on how to pay the measure's $6 billion price tag, the chief source of partisan conflict.

The goal is to push legislation through Congress next week so the current 3.4 percent interest rate on subsidized Stafford loans can be preserved for another year. A 2007 law gradually reduced interest rates on the loans but required them to balloon back to 6.8 percent this July 1 in a cost-saving maneuver.

On another front, the two sides were also close to an agreement to overhaul federal transportation programs, according to House and Senate aides from both parties. Negotiations were expected to continue through the weekend, with votes expected next week on either a major transportation bill or an extension of current programs, said the aides, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss details of the talks.

Obama said Saturday in his weekly radio and Internet address there was "no excuse for inaction."

"Right now, we are seven days away from thousands of American workers having to walk off the job because Congress hasn't passed a transportation bill. We are eight days away from nearly seven and a half million students seeing their loan rates double because Congress hasn't acted to stop it," Obama said. "This makes no sense."

For weeks, Obama has ridiculed Republicans for not moving quickly to prevent student loan interest rates from doubling, a stance that Democrats have hoped will boost his support among young voters who broadly backed him in the 2008 election. With college costs and student debt growing steadily, the issue ties directly into concerns about the economy and jobs that polls show dominate voters' worries.

Though some rank-and-file GOP lawmakers have opposed letting the government set the rates, Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney and GOP congressional leaders have backed the one-year extension. The remaining dispute has been over how to pay for it.

Republicans have accused Obama of creating a phony issue and drawing out the battle in an attempt to reap political points. In late May, they proposed several options to pay for the measure, all of which were culled from budget savings Obama himself had proposed in the past, but they said the White House was ignoring them.

"Even though the White House refuses to respond to our bipartisan approach, Senate Democrats are finally working with us, and a solution is within reach ? despite the president's failure to act," said Don Stewart, spokesman for Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

The talks have involved aides to McConnell and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. Democrats said the White House has been kept abreast of the talks, while Republicans said House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, has been kept informed but hasn't participated in the negotiations.

According to Democratic aides, negotiators are approaching a deal to cover the bill's costs by charging companies more to insure pensions and changing rules so companies take fewer tax deductions for their pension contributions. Reid proposed both of those ideas this month.

They said additional money would come from a list of options McConnell has offered, probably one to limit federal subsidies of undergraduates' loans to six years. The government does not begin charging interest on Stafford loans until after students graduate, which can take longer than six years.

"While we're not there, we're well down the road. I think we can get something done," Reid told reporters Thursday. He said McConnell and Boehner "are compromising just as we are and hope we can get something done."

If allowed to double, the higher 6.8 percent rate would apply only to new subsidized Stafford loans for undergraduates approved starting on July 1 and would not affect existing loans.

According to the Education Department, 7.4 million students are expected to get new Stafford loans in the year beginning July 1, with each borrowing an average $4,226. A doubling of interest rates would add about $1,000 to the costs of the average loan, which students typically pay off over 10 or more years.

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York said last month that student loan debt grew this year to $904 billion, even as other types of consumer debt were falling.

UK parents charged with killing kids kept from funeral

Phil Noble / Reuters

The coffins of six children who died in a house fire are carried into St Mary's Church for their funeral service in Derby, central England, Friday. Their parents, Mick and Mairead Philpott have been charged with causing their deaths.

By msnbc.com staff

LONDON -- A British couple charged with the murders of their six children were kept in jail pending their trial as the children's mass funeral was held Friday, according to a report.

The children -- Duwayne Philpott, 13; and younger siblings Jade, 10; John, 9; Jack, 8; Jesse, 6; and Jayden, 5 -- died in an arson attack on their home in Derby, England, on May 11.

Their parents, Mick and Mairead Philpott, broke down in tears at a press conference days after the fire; they were arrested on suspicion of murder on May 29.

Assistant Chief Constable Steve Cotterill, of Derbyshire Constabulary, said the funeral would be "an understandably difficult and emotional time and I would particularly ask that anyone attending, and the media who cover the funeral, respect the privacy of the family and mourners," according to ITV News.

Six horse-drawn hearses took the children's bodies to St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bridgegate, where Friday's service was held.

A firefighter walks past the fire-damaged house in which six children died in Derby, central England.

The Order of Service, which was reproduced by ITV News, included tributes and photographs of each of the children:

  • Duwayne was "a charming and caring young boy that was turning into a young man."
  • Jade was "a beautiful princess who became a mother hen to her younger brothers ? she would always carry them around on her hip."
  • John was "a cheeky chappy, always lively and ready to pick a fight with all the boys? No matter how much he was in trouble he would always crack a smile and find it a joke."
  • Jack was "a real pretty boy with bright blue eyes. He was cute, cuddly and content with everyything? he was the quietest sibling and he was a delight to be around."
  • Jesse was "crazy, clumsy and cheerful? He was fearless, getting into scrambles with his brothers, with no care in the world."
  • Jayden "being the baby of the family was looked after by his big brothers and mothered by Jade? He would go into the garden clean and come back into the house messy in minutes."

The Telegraph newspaper reported the children's parents, who are in jail awaiting trial,?were not allowed to attend the funeral by the prison service.

PST: France will need plenty more vs. Spain

Man of the Match

What a substitution Christian Wilhelmsson turned out to be. Entering at halftime, he immediately pepped up the Swedish attack, creating chances for himself and others with energetic, smart movement up front. French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris needed to be all he could be after the break, otherwise France would have gone into the quarters off a bigger defeat.

NBC Sports: France reaches quarters despite 2-0 loss

Packaged for take-away

  • France needed just a point from Tuesday?s match at the Donbass Arena to move out of group play. But the full three points would have seen Laurent Blanc?s team dodge Spain in the quarters. Now, they?ll need to dig up some confidence (good luck with all that) while they try to solve the Spanish passing riddle right away.
  • A pretty nice start to this one, with efforts toward goal just a?flyin? on both sides. France gradually had more possession and more of the first-half chances, though not necessarily the better ones.
  • In the 10th minute, French center back Philippe Mexes nearly turned this one upside down with the kind of mistake everyone thought him capable of making. Failing to win a routine challenge meant that Sweden?s Ola Toivonen went gliding in alone on goal with all kinds of time. The PSV striker rounded Lloris but couldn?t squeeze in his shot from a tough angle.
  • Mexes? 68th minute yellow (as he fouled needlessly far away from French goal) means he?ll miss his team?s elimination match. What is it they say about ?little mercies?? Looks like there will be a Laurent Koscielny sighting in France?s future.
  • Samir Nasri?s possession work as France?s offensive anchor was about like it?s been during the other tournament matches, OK but tilting toward the dull side, in dire need of some invention and perhaps more vertical movement.
  • French striker Karim Benzema started closer to goal, as so many have begged him to do. But he gradually moved further back into the midfield, and that lack of movement and inability to draw center backs occasionally out of position bit the French once again.
  • Given France?s desire to press high, win the ball back quickly and then possess it, they really do look like a Spain starter kit ? but not a great one. There?s such a rigidity, such a lack movement and flair about it all, and not enough purpose. Perhaps that?s not so strange since France doesn?t have a Xabi Alonso, a Xavi, etc. But they do have a few fleet feet, and Les Bleus were at their most dangerous when they attacked with speed, using Franck Ribery?s speed, for instance, or pinging quickly off Benzema?s credible hold-up play.
  • Let?s talk about that Zlatan Ibrahimovi? goal (in the 54th). Most strikers wouldn?t even think to try such a thing, a twisting, scissors shot, where the ball winds up a little high and slightly behind him at almost 18 yards out. No problem for Ibrahimovic, who had the confidence to try that crazy shot and the athleticism and technical ability to pull it off. As ESPN analyst Taylor Twellman said: ?You have got to be kidding me!? And Twellman hit some pretty decent goals in his day ? so that?s quite a statement.
  • French free kicks in the attacking third fell somewhere between ?useless? and ?aweful.?
  • J?r?my M?nez squeezed through a gap in the Swedish defense late, using the same kind of darting, well-chosen run we saw the young PSG midfielder fabricate to such effect against Ukraine.
