Unlocked engine covers caused BA emergency landing - regulator

By Rhys Jones and Brenda Goh

LONDON (Reuters) - British air safety regulators ordered Airbus to notify operators of its A320 jets to make specific safety checks after finding unlocked engine covers had forced a jet to make an emergency landing at London's Heathrow airport last week.

An Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) report published on Friday said two coverings or cowls on the Airbus A319's engines were left unlatched after maintenance and this was not noticed before the aircraft departed.

All 75 passengers and five crew were unharmed after having been evacuated via the aircraft's emergency chutes following the Oslo-bound plane's emergency landing.

As a result of its investigation, the AAIB has formally requested Airbus notify operators of A320-family aircraft to check that the fan cowl doors are fully closed prior to flight by visually checking the position of the latches.

BA, whose own engineering team services its engines, said it would comply with the AAIB's recommendations. BA is owned by International Airlines Group.

"We are supporting the AAIB-led investigation and will follow its recommendations," Airbus said in a statement.

The AAIB said that prior to the BA incident there had been 32 reported fan cowl door detachment events by July 2012, 80 percent of which had occurred during takeoff.

The AAIB report said the fan doors from both engines of the BA jet detached during takeoff, puncturing a fuel pipe on the right engine and damaging the airframe and some aircraft systems. In turn this lead to a fire in the right engine on the approach to land.

It said fastening the fan cowl door latches usually required maintenance personnel to lie on the ground to reach the latches, and that the latches were difficult to see unless the person was crouching down.

BA's A319s are powered by two IAE V2500 engines made by the International Aero Engines consortium, part-owned by Pratt & Whitney parent UTC.

The AAIB said the BA plane's right engine was extensively fire damaged but the left engine continued to perform normally.

This contradicts findings made by America's National Transport Safety Board (NTSB), which on Thursday said the plane was forced to land after pilots shut down one engine, while the other caught fire.

US Transportation agency backs public use of selfdriving cars, urges states to adopt friendly legislation

The key to road safety may lie in self-driving cars. That's the general conclusion of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's recently released policy report which urges states to draw up legislation that encourages testing of automated autos. Currently, only three states (i.e., California, Nevada and Florida) have enacted laws that permit companies like Google to operate these vehicles on public roadways. But the NHTSA hopes that with more state-backed adoption, advances in vehicle-to-vehicle communication and automatic braking can more quickly be refined, thus paving the way for industry standards and eventual commercial deployment.

The agency, an arm of the US Department of Transportation, is also conducting its own research into V2V systems and driver guidelines for self-driving cars; the first phase of which is set to play out over a four-year period. For now, though, it still has a few additional hurdles to overcome, namely consumer perception (the NHTSA estimates self-driving cars could reduce crashes by 80 percent) and possible WiFi interference from the whitespace spectrum freed up by the FCC. Though the NHTSA's sights are clearly set on an automated vehicle future, it's yet to determine whether or not inclusion and use of that tech will be mandated.

A chemical reaction between iron-containing minerals and water may produce enough hydrogen "food" to sustain microbial communities living in pores and cracks within the enormous volume of rock below the ocean floor and parts of the continents, according to a new study led by the University of Colorado Boulder.

The findings, published in the journal Nature Geoscience, also hint at the possibility that hydrogen-dependent life could have existed where iron-rich igneous rocks on Mars were once in contact with water.

Scientists have thoroughly investigated how rock-water reactions can produce hydrogen in places where the temperatures are far too hot for living things to survive, such as in the rocks that underlie hydrothermal vent systems on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean. The hydrogen gases produced in those rocks do eventually feed microbial life, but the communities are located only in small, cooler oases where the vent fluids mix with seawater.

The new study, led by CU-Boulder Research Associate Lisa Mayhew, set out to investigate whether hydrogen-producing reactions also could take place in the much more abundant rocks that are infiltrated with water at temperatures cool enough for life to survive.

"Water-rock reactions that produce hydrogen gas are thought to have been one of the earliest sources of energy for life on Earth," said Mayhew, who worked on the study as a doctoral student in CU-Boulder Associate Professor Alexis Templeton's lab in the Department of Geological Sciences.

"However, we know very little about the possibility that hydrogen will be produced from these reactions when the temperatures are low enough that life can survive. If these reactions could make enough hydrogen at these low temperatures, then microorganisms might be able to live in the rocks where this reaction occurs, which could potentially be a huge subsurface microbial habitat for hydrogen-utilizing life."

When igneous rocks, which form when magma slowly cools deep within the Earth, are infiltrated by ocean water, some of the minerals release unstable atoms of iron into the water. At high temperatures warmer than 392 degrees Fahrenheit scientists know that the unstable atoms, known as reduced iron, can rapidly split water molecules and produce hydrogen gas, as well as new minerals containing iron in the more stable, oxidized form.

Mayhew and her co-authors, including Templeton, submerged rocks in water in the absence of oxygen to determine if a similar reaction would take place at much lower temperatures, between 122 and 212 degrees Fahrenheit. The researchers found that the rocks did create hydrogen potentially enough hydrogen to support life.

To understand in more detail the chemical reactions that produced the hydrogen in the lab experiments, the researchers used "synchrotron radiation" which is created by electrons orbiting in a manmade storage ring to determine the type and location of iron in the rocks on a microscale.

The researchers expected to find that the reduced iron in minerals like olivine had converted to the more stable oxidized state, just as occurs at higher temperatures. But when they conducted their analyses at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource at Stanford University, they were surprised to find newly formed oxidized iron on "spinel" minerals found in the rocks. Spinels are minerals with a cubic structure that are highly conductive.

Finding oxidized iron on the spinels led the team to hypothesize that, at low temperatures, the conductive spinels were helping facilitate the exchange of electrons between reduced iron and water, a process that is necessary for the iron to split the water molecules and create the hydrogen gas.

"After observing the formation of oxidized iron on spinels, we realized there was a strong correlation between the amount of hydrogen produced and the volume percent of spinel phases in the reaction materials," Mayhew said. "Generally, the more spinels, the more hydrogen."

Not only is there a potentially large volume of rock on Earth that may undergo these low temperature reactions, but the same types of rocks also are prevalent on Mars, Mayhew said. Minerals that form as a result of the water-rock reactions on Earth have been detected on Mars as well, which means that the process described in the new study may have implications for potential Martian microbial habitats.

###

Mayhew and Templeton are already building on this study with their co-authors, including Thomas McCollom at CU-Boulder's Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics, to see if the hydrogen-producing reactions can actually sustain microbes in the lab.

This study was funded by the David and Lucille Packard Foundation and with a U.S. Department of Energy Early Career grant to Templeton.

Amazon Reportedly Sets June 7 Launch For Kindle Devices In China

Amazon PaperwhiteAfter more than a year of speculation and delays, Amazon Kindle e-readers and tablets will reportedly be available for sale in China on June 7. E-readers like the Paperwhite and Kindle Fire tablets will be sold on Amazon China’s Web site, as well as Tesco stores operated by retail conglomerate Suning. Amazon Kindle kiosks have already been spotted in a Beijing Tesco, Sina Tech reports (link via Google Translate). The price of the Kindle Paperwhite Wi-Fi has reportedly been set at 849 RMB (about $138), while the Kindle Fire HD will sell for about 1,400 to 1,500 RMB ($228 to $244). Amazon has gradually rolled out its Kindle platform in China. Documentation appeared late last year showing that the Kindle had begun to support simplified Chinese characters. In December, Amazon’s China?site added a Kindle store category and made Kindle app downloads available. The company also launched its Chinese-language Web site for developers earlier this month, promising that they would soon have access to customers in 200 countries. Despite its slow and steady approach, Amazon has faced several obstacles, including regulatory challenges for its e-book business from the General Administration of Press and Publication, China’s state censorship organization. Amazon China does not have a license to publish e-books and instead partnered with domestic e-publisher ChineseAll.com to launch Kindle book downloads last December. In response, the General Administration of Press and Publication launched an investigation into the partnership last December, stating that borrowing a license is against the law. It’s also unclear if Amazon will be able to reap any profit from tapping into the world’s second-largest market in the e-reader industry. In the U.S., Amazon sells its hardware at cost, relying instead on sales of books, apps and movies for profit. In China, however, Amazon not only has to deal with scrutiny, but also with domestic competitors, including media conglomerate Hanvon, Dangdang and Shanda, who have already gained a solid foothold on the e-publishing market, as well as pirated versions of popular titles. The wide availability of e-books, as well as cheap Android tablets, may mean Amazon will have to make significant adjustments to its revenue model in China.

How do plants grow toward the light? Scientists explain mechanism behind phototropism

May 28, 2013 ? Plants have developed a number of strategies to capture the maximum amount of sunlight through their leaves. As we know from looking at plants on a windowsill, they grow toward the sunlight to be able to generate energy by photosynthesis. Now an international team of scientists has provided definitive insights into the driving force behind this movement -- the plant hormone auxin.

The growth of plants toward light is particularly important at the beginning of their lifecycle. Many seeds germinate in the soil and get their nutrition in the dark from their limited reserves of starch and lipids. Reaching for the surface, the seedlings rapidly grow upwards against the gravitational pull, which provides an initial clue for orientation. With the help of highly sensitive light-sensing proteins, they find the shortest route to the sunlight -- and are even able to bend in the direction of the light source.

"Even mature plants bend toward the strongest light. They do this by elongating the cells of the stem on the side that is farthest from the light. This type of light-oriented growth is called phototropism," explains Prof. Claus Schwechheimer from the Chair of Plant Systems Biology at the Technische Universit?t M?nchen (TUM).

Transporters move plant hormone to target site

The substance responsible for cell elongation is auxin. This phytohormone is formed in cells at the tip of the shoot and is then passed from cell to cell. As such, the hormone is shuttled through many cells of the plant before it reaches its final destination. "Export and import proteins push the auxin out of one cell into the intercellular space and then into the next cell and so on until the auxin eventually reaches its target site," outlines Schwechheimer.

The most important proteins in this process are the export proteins known as "PINs," which regulate the direction of the auxin flow. As Schwechheimer's team was able to demonstrate, these PINs do not function on their own: "They require the signal of the D6PK protein kinase," Schwechheimer continues. "The kinase enzyme modifies the PINs through the transfer of phosphate groups -- thus activating them as auxin transporters."

What is the role of auxin?

The movements of plants were first described comprehensively by Charles Darwin in 1880 in his seminal work "The power of movement in plants." The theory that the plant hormone auxin could play a role in plants bending toward a light source was first proposed in 1937 by the Dutch researcher Frits Went in the Cholodny-Went model.

Even though many subsequent observations have supported this model, up to now there has been no definite proof that auxin is in fact involved in this process. Prof. Christian Fankhauser from UNIL (Universit? de Lausanne) in Switzerland explains why: "Up to now, all plants with a known defect in auxin transport showed a normal phototropism. How then could auxin transport be essential for this process?"

Auxin regulation model confirmed

The TUM team, in cooperation with their colleagues at UNIL, have found the answer to this question. The Swiss researchers were able to inactivate several PIN transporters in a plant simultaneously. And for their part, the TUM scientists managed to demonstrate the function of the D6PK protein kinase.

It was found that when several of the PIN and kinase components were missing, plant growth was completely unresponsive to the light signals that trigger phototropism. The auxin transport mechanism in these mutant plants was severely impaired: The plants grew upwards, away from the gravitational pull, irrespective of the light source. This helped the scientists prove for the first time that the hormone auxin definitely is the substance that drives phototropism.

Japanese bond yields inch up. Are 'Abenomics' to blame?

Japanese bond yields have started to move up again, rising above the pre-'Abenomics' level to 0.91 percent, Karlsson writes, something that worries many Japanese officials.?Private demand has collapsed as investors have increasingly started to believe that the Bank of Japan through its purchases will actually achieve its new stated inflation target of 2 percent, a slump in demand that some have called a "bond buyer's strike."

At first after "Abenomics" was launched, the already very low yields on Japanese government bonds fell further, from about 0.8% to 0.35%, ?which kind of made sense since Abenomics meant mass purchases of government bonds, and increased demand on something will of course mean a higher price, which in turn in the case of bonds implies lower yields.

However, lately, yields have started to move up again, rising above the pre-"Abenomics" level to 0.91% as of this writing, something that worries many Japanese officials. But how could yields rise when the Bank of Japan makes record large purchases? Well, because private demand has collapsed as investors have increasingly started to believe that the Bank of Japan through its purchases will actually achieve its new stated inflation target of 2%, a slump in demand that some have called a "bond buyer's strike."

And if inflation is going to be 2% why would anyone in their right mind want to hold bonds that have nominal yields of less than 1%? The answer is of course that no one should and that investors should protect their savings by investing in fixed assets instead.?

Republicans see 'Obamacare' issues as key to 2014

WASHINGTON (AP) ? If Republicans were writing a movie script for next year's congressional elections, the working title might be "2014: Apocalypse of Obamacare."

The plot: The rollout of President Barack Obama's health care law turns into such a disaster that enraged voters rebuke him by rewarding the GOP with undisputed control of Congress.

But there's a risk for Republicans if they're wrong and the Affordable Care Act works reasonably well, particularly in states that have embraced it. Republicans might be seen as obstinately standing in the way of progress.

The law already has been a political prop in two election seasons, but next year will be different.

Voters will have a real program to judge, working or dysfunctional. Will affordable health care finally be a reality for millions of uninsured working people? Or will premiums skyrocket as the heavy hand of government upends already fragile insurance markets for small businesses and individuals?

"The end of this movie has not been written," said Robert Blendon, a Harvard professor who tracks public opinion on health care. He says next year's movie actually will be a documentary: what happens in states that fully put the law in place and those that resist ? "a message of reality."

One of the most prominent doomsayers is Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who predicts "Obamacare" probably will be the biggest issue of 2014 and "an albatross around the neck of every Democrat who voted for it."

"This thing can't possibly work," says McConnell. "It will be a huge disaster in 2014."

Counting on that, House Republicans are busy framing an election narrative, voting to repeal the health law and trying to link it to the scandal over the Internal Revenue Service's targeting of tea party groups. It could help excite the conservative base.

But Democratic pollster Celinda Lake doubts reality will follow the GOP script. Next year, "we won't have to worry about the mythology laid out by the right wing about Obamacare: death panels and dramatic cuts to Medicare," she said.

Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., said uninsured people in her state will have over 200 coverage options to choose from. "We have been hearing the fear, but in states like mine, people are seeing the reality," she said.

In just about five months, people without access to coverage through their jobs can start shopping for subsidized private insurance in new state markets. The actual benefits begin Jan. 1. But because of continuing opposition to the law from many Republican governors and state legislators, the federal government will be running the insurance markets in more than half the states.

Another major element of the law, the expansion of Medicaid to serve more low-income people, also has run into problems. With many legislative sessions over or winding down, it looks like fewer than half the states may accept the expansion. That means millions of low-income people are likely to remain uninsured, at least initially.

Other early indicators of how well the health care rollout might fare are mixed.

In a dozen or so states that have started releasing details of their new insurance markets, there's robust insurer interest in participating, according to the market research firm Avalere Health. That's a good signal for competition.

There still are concerns about a spike in premiums for people who already buy their own coverage, particularly the young and healthy. That could happen for several reasons.

The health care law forbids insurers to deny coverage to sick people, and it limits what older adults can be charged. Also, the plans that will be offered next year are more comprehensive than many bare-bones policies currently available to individuals.

Another big source of angst is the Obama administration. The Health and Human Services Department will be running the program in half the country while trying to fight off attempts by congressional Republicans to starve it financially. Unusual for a social program, the administration is largely operating behind a veil of secrecy.

Will Obama's underlings turn out to be the Keystone Kops of health care?

Frustration that he and his constituents couldn't get basic information from the administration led one of the authors of the law, Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., to warn recently that he sees "a huge train wreck coming down."

Republicans loved it. Lost in the uproar was the fact that Baucus was referring to potential problems with implementation. He stills thinks the health care law itself is a good thing.

The administration official running the rollout, Gary Cohen, told Congress this past that he didn't agree with the senator's statement. "We are very much on schedule," Cohen said.

Republican pollster Bill McInturff says he's skeptical of what he hears from the administration as well as from his own party. McInturff, who has made polling on health care his specialty, says the launch of any national program is bound to have problems. President George W. Bush's Medicare prescription benefit went through several weeks of chaos before things got smoothed out.

"Life experience says to me there is not going to be some simple, clear narrative that is sitting here today," McInturff said.

Rocket fired from Lebanon towards Israel: residents

BEIRUT (Reuters) - A rocket was fired from south Lebanon towards Israel on Sunday, Lebanese security sources said, and residents of a northern Israeli town reported hearing a blast.

"An explosion was heard. Soldiers are searching the area. The cause is still being investigated," an Israeli military spokeswoman said. A second Israeli military source said the explosion was probably caused by a mortar.

The incident came amid heightened tensions in the region over Syria's civil war. Damascus has said it will respond to Israeli air strikes earlier this month against suspected Iranian missiles in Syria destined for the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

The rocket launch could be heard from the Lebanese town of Marjayoun, about 10 km (six miles) from the Israeli border, residents in the Lebanese town said.

Earlier on Sunday, two rockets were fired into a Shi'ite district of southern Beirut after Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah pledged his Shi'ite Muslim guerrilla group would fight in Syria until victory for President Bashar al-Assad.

Assad is battling a two-year rebellion in which the United Nations says at least 80,000 people have been killed.

AP Interview: Israel deputy FM proud to be settler

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Zeev Elkin has faced a wave of criticism since he was made the de facto chief of Israel's Foreign Ministry two months ago: He isn't prepared for compromise with the Palestinians. He doesn't speak English well enough. He is a West Bank settler.

But Israel's deputy foreign minister, who is the top official until a new foreign minister is named, makes no apologies for his ideology or background, and in fact thinks they are an advantage. Claiming to reflect the "real positions" of most Israelis, Elkin says the world should get used to dealing with Jewish settlers and right-wing Israeli politicians.

"It is a mistake to think the Foreign Ministry needs a person whose views the world would rather hear but do not reflect the government or the majority in Israel," Elkin said in an interview. "You cannot fool the world."

Elkin, a rising star in Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud Party, was handed the No. 2 spot at the Foreign Ministry following parliamentary elections early this year.

Netanyahu has promised the foreign minister's job to his political partner, Avigdor Lieberman. With Lieberman on trial on fraud and breach of trust charges, he is unable to assume the post.

For now, Netanyahu has taken on the foreign minister's job until Lieberman's trial ends, handling many key diplomatic functions while Elkins oversees the ministry's day to day affairs.

The job is the latest stop for the fast-rising Elkin, a 42-year-old immigrant from the former Soviet Union who holds degrees in mathematics and history. In the previous government, he was the chairman of Netanyahu's governing coalition, one of the most important and influential positions in parliament.

Elkin is among a group of young, hard-liners who rose to prominence in Netanyahu's Likud Party during a primary vote last year. These officials, including Deputy Defense Minister Danny Danon and the Knesset speaker Yuli Edelstein, are skeptical of reaching peace with the Palestinians and strong proponents of building settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Edelstein also lives in the West Bank. Lieberman, the would-be foreign minister, is also a settler, and Netanyahu's trade minister, Naftali Bennett, leads a pro-settler religious party and himself is a former head of the settlers' council.

The presence of so many Jewish settlers in key positions has drawn accusations that the new Israeli government is the most pro-settler in history, and raised deep Palestinian suspicions about Israel's willingness to make concessions for peace.

The Palestinians and the international community reject Jewish settlements as illegal or illegitimate, and continued Israeli construction is at the heart of a nearly 5-year-old deadlock in peace efforts.

Speaking slightly accented Hebrew in a soft monotone voice, Elkin said the settlements, home to more than 500,000 Israelis, have become a fact of life that must be recognized.

With so many settlers, "naturally they are represented in the hallways of government," he said. "I am not embarrassed of being a settler. I don't think I need to apologize to anyone about it."

Danon, the deputy defense minister, said he couldn't agree more, saying that Israel is "proud" of its settlers, and that giving them important jobs would help negative perceptions of them worldwide.

"I do not see any difference between a Jew who lives in a Jewish community in Judea and Samaria or elsewhere," he said. "When you meet those people, maybe the image that you have is a different one than the reality."

But Zehava Galon, leader of the opposition Meretz Party, said Elkin's appointment sent a bad message to the world.

"When our foreign relations are based on a settler agenda it is problematic," she said. "These are people with an agenda to keep settlements and not reach a compromise. I don't understand how they can manage Israel's foreign relations."

For now, Elkin's ideological leanings have not been much of a problem. He said meetings with foreign diplomats have been pleasant and professional, and in many cases, he knows them personally from his past work in parliament.

In addition, Netanyahu has distanced Elkin from key issues, particularly in dealing with U.S. efforts to restart peace talks with the Palestinians. Netanyahu handles the contacts with the Americans himself and has delegated Justice Minister Tzipi Livni to serve as his chief negotiator if peace talks resume.

Elkin said he has no problem with this arrangement, noting that in Israel's fragmented political system, prime ministers have historically reserved key diplomatic functions for themselves.

Elkin said he still deals with "98 percent" of Israel's diplomatic issues, which is more than enough. He recently joined Netanyahu at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where Israel pressed the Russian leader not to ship advanced weapons to Syria. Elkin refused to divulge details of the talks, saying only that they were "constructive."

Elkin said that he has not allowed his personal views on the Palestinian issue to affect his professional work. He has already assigned a small team of Foreign Ministry workers to assist Livni in her attempts to restart talks with the Palestinians, and said he would expand the team if negotiations resume.

And while Elkin opposes the Palestinian demand to freeze settlement construction, he said it is "no secret" that the government has greatly limited settlement projects in recent weeks at U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry's urging.

Elkin heaped the blame for the current impasse in peace efforts on the Palestinians, accusing them of setting unrealistic conditions at the outset of talks, promoting hatred and glorifying violence. Such accusations, denied by the Palestinians, are common among Israel's right wing.

If Israel and the Palestinians somehow defy the odds and reach a deal, Elkin signaled he would not stand in the way.

"I am a democrat and therefore willing to accept any decision made by a democratic majority," he said.

He just might not be part of the government if it reaches that point. "If I feel I can't represent the government, I will not stick to my chair," he said.

Cambodian film on Pol Pot rule wins Cannes prize

(AP) ? A French-Cambodian film, "The Missing Picture," which explores the bloody history of Pol Pot's dictatorship in late 1970s Cambodia, has won the "Un Certain Regard" prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

To rousing applause, director Rithy Panh collected the award at a ceremony Saturday night, expressing his gratitude to be able "to have the freedom to do the films I want to do."

The "Un Certain Regard" accolade, presented one day before the Palme d'Or, is often seen to reward up-and-coming filmmakers and works that transmit original messages and aesthetics.

Panh's film, based on his nightmarish memoir "The Elimination," documents his own family's experience under the heavy-handed Communist Party's Khmer Rouge that resulted in the death of his parents and sisters.

Still in good shape

Norv Turner, Josh GordonAP

With coach Rob Chudzinski and offensive coordinator Norv Turner installing a new system in Cleveland, Browns receiver Josh Gordon is excited.

Gordon, a speedy receiver who averaged 16.1 yards a catch as a rookie, says he expects to make even more big plays in his second season because the Browns? offense will be perfectly suited for his talents.

?Defenses will be shocked to say the least with how much we?re running down field,? Gordon told the Akron Beacon Journal. ?I?ve never ran this much as a wide receiver ever in my life, and that?s a good thing. And not just me, everyone from the slot guys to running backs, everyone?s got passing plays in the system.?

Last year Gordon didn?t have much time to get ready for the NFL after arriving in July in the supplemental draft, but he still managed to play in all 16 games, starting 13, and catch 50 passes while leading the Browns with 805 receiving yards and five touchdown catches. This year, being with the team from Day One and participating in Organized Team Activities, Gordon believes he?s going to be even better.

?You?re a head up on the game,? he said. ?For guys, veterans and rookies, to have all this leading up until [the fall], I was way behind the 8-ball coming into last year. Now it?s a huge advantage for me to learn the offense, get in shape, get in more of a rhythm with whatever you?re doing out there, so you don?t feel as stressed or as new to everything. It?s definitely slowed down a lot.?

Last year, Gordon had a good year despite missing most of the offseason and playing in a bad offense that wasn?t well suited to his skills. This year, Gordon has every reason to believe he?ll be even better.

Mobile Broadband Dongle Package Myths - Broadband Internet ...

Joined: Apr 17, 2013

195 articles

There are many myths that surround mobile broadband dongle packages. Some of these myths do have a bit of truth in them, while some of them are pure fabrication. There are other myths that relate to outdated information. Mobile broadband dongles are not very well understood, even though 99% of the country is able to get mobile broadband. It is best to look at these myths and see if they are true or not.

Mobile Broadband Data Allowances are not Sufficient
This myth is both true and untrue, depending on how you define ?sufficient.? The amount of data a user requires depends greatly on what they are looking to do online. If they are only going to be checking their email then mobile broadband usually offers more than enough data. However, if they are looking to watch hours and hours of YouTube, then they will definitely not have enough data. ?Sufficient? data allowance is all relative to the person using the broadband.

It is possible to get up to 50GB of data per month with many fixed-term broadband deals. Of course, there are other deals that only offer 500mb of data. You can also get PAYG broadband, where you are able to get as much data as you need by topping up your broadband.

Mobile Broadband Dongles have Slower Speeds
This myth is also true and untrue, depending on the technology. 3G mobile broadband does offer slower speeds than home broadband packages. However, 4G mobile broadband is able to offer speeds that compare to home broadband. Of course, the speed of your mobile broadband will be affected by the provider coverage and your location with respect to the mobile tower.

3G connections are able to get up to 21mb per second if the signal is excellent and the browser is fast. Generally, people are able to get around 7mb per second on a 3G connection, and this is well below the 14mb per second that ADSL users can get. 4G connections, however, offer speeds of up to 40mb per second. This surpasses ADSL connections but not fibre optic connections, which can reach speeds of up to 100mb.

Contract Lengths are Very Long
This myth is not actually true. While there are a number of providers that offer 24 month contracts, it is possible to get shorter contracts. In fact, you can even get PAYG broadband if you are seriously opposed to contracts of any length. The most common contracts for mobile broadband are 12 to 18 months.

The longer contracts are generally part of mobile broadband packages where you get something for free. If you are looking at an iPad deal, for example, then you will find a lot of 24 month contracts. The reason for this is that the provider needs to make back the cost of the free item over the contract length. The longer the contract length the lower the rates they can offer you, but you have to be careful with this: there are a lot of deals that have you paying more for the free item over the length of the contract than you would if you bought it outright.

Data Charges are Very High
This myth is true and untrue as well, depending on the charges you are looking at. There are a number of different data charges that you may have to pay. The first is the initial outlay for your base data allowance. This cost is generally less then you may think. The stiff competition in the market has forced providers to lower their rates to prevent losing business.

The second charge you may face is for exceeding your data allowance. These charges will vary depending on your provider. Most providers charge a set rate for every GB over your data allowance you have used. You may suffer further penalties if you constantly go over your allowance so you should check the small print of your contract for these penalties.

The last charge you may find yourself facing is when you use the broadband abroad. You may have to pay to get international roaming activated. The cost of using data in another country is also very high. If you go over your limit you may find yourself paying double, if not three times, the normal excess charges. It is for this reason that most people recommend not taking your broadband with you when you leave the country.

You Need a Dongle
This myth is also true and untrue, but this is dependent on technology. There are a number of devices that connect to mobile broadband without the use of a dongle. You can get computers that have built-in 3G modems, and tablets simply need the sim card for your mobile broadband.

If you are looking to not have a USB dongle but do not have one of these devices then you can look at MiFi. This is a type of dongle that does not actually connect to your computer. The MiFi dongle connects to the 3G network and then transmits a wireless signal that allows your devices to connect to the network.

Mobile Broadband is a Luxury
This myth is completely untrue. Mobile broadband can be cheaper than getting fixed line broadband. With fixed line broadband you have to consider line rental if you are getting an ADSL connection. If you are getting a fibre optic connection then the package will cost even more. With mobile broadband you do not have to worry about line rental and you could get rid of the phone service completely.

The contract that a mobile broadband offers can be very cheap if you take the time to shop around. You can also get PAYG mobile broadband, which allows you to only spend what you want to. All of these options make mobile broadband cheaper than traditional home broadband, and not a luxury.

Mobile Broadband is for Outdoor Use
This myth is untrue. It is actually amazing the number of people who think that mobile broadband is only for when you are out and about. The truth is that around 75% of all mobile broadband users connect to the internet within their homes on their mobile broadband connections. It is also possible to get a router that allows you to use mobile broadband in the same way as home broadband.

Hopefully, these myth-busters will help clarify many of the misconceptions around mobile broadband, dongles and connecting to the internet from anywhere.

AT&T adding iPhone, 4G LTE / HSPA+ support to GoPhone starting tomorrow

AT&T will allow iPhones, 4G LTE HSPA service on GoPhone prepaid starting tomorrow

AT&T's official GoPhone prepaid policy has always officially prevented network data access for iPhones (and other 4G devices except for BlackBerry), but a tipster reports that will change tomorrow. The new policy adds 4G HSPA+ and LTE support as well as Visual Voicemail access to the GoPhone package, with customers able to bring their own device or buy a new one at off-contract unsubsidized prices. According to the details, existing customers with iPhones will be automatically updated with network access on June 21st, however they'll be able to call in and make the switch manually before that. The new features work on the $65, $50 and $25 monthly plans, however the two lower priced options will require data packages to work. You can get a peek at the leaked terms after the break, although we'd wait for an official announcement before picking up your 4G-capable handset and requesting service.

Kentwood, Kentridge fall in state semifinals | 4A Baseball | High ...

Originally published May 24, 2013 at 7:36 PM | Page modified May 24, 2013 at 11:50 PM

PASCO ? Kentwood coach Mark Zender couldn't find fault with the way his team played. He didn't think they played poorly or that they cost themselves the game.

Instead, he simply thought his team, which won the 4A state championship a year ago, lost in a 1-0 coin-flip game against South Kitsap in Friday's Class 4A state semifinals at Gesa Stadium.

"I told the guys that it really wasn't a matter of us not playing well," Zender said. "It was just a ballgame either team could have won. A classic 1-0 game.

"They have a reason to hold their heads high."

After South Kitsap took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on a sac fly from Cody Wolfe, Kentwood had a couple of chances to tie or take the lead.

The best opportunity came in the sixth inning. The Conquerors had two runners on with catcher Reese McGuire, a future first-round draft pick, at the plate. McGuire drew a walk that loaded the bases with two outs and brought up cleanup hitter Tanner Wessling.

But South Kitsap pitcher Michael Wood struck out Wessling and ended the threat. Wood pitched a complete game and had a four-inning stretch where he didn't allow a hit.

"He's done that the whole year," South Kitsap coach Marcus Logue said.

Kentwood had one more chance in the seventh inning. Connor Sims singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Spencer Greene stepped to the plate with two outs and the tying run on second, but he struck out to end the game.

The Conquerors remained in the game because of pitcher Jordan Jones, a 6-foot-1 freshman who consistently worked out of jams. Jones pitched a complete game and scattered six hits while striking out seven.

"He's poised and beyond his years in terms of his mental approach and his ability to deal with adversity and the situation," Zender said. "We were playing this weekend to win the state championship, and we didn't have any reason to believe Jordan wasn't the guy to get us to that game."

Kentwood will play Kentridge at 1 p.m. Saturday, while South Kitsap will play Skyview at 7 p.m. for the Class 4A state title.

Skyview 10, Kentridge 0

Skyview pitcher Ian Hamilton didn't give Kentridge any wiggle room in Friday's other 4A state semifinal. He didn't give them much of anything, actually.

Hamilton struck out 10 as Skyview blasted past Kentridge in five innings.

Kentridge managed just two hits as Hamilton completely corralled the Chargers' attack.

Skyview did its real damage in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Storm entered the inning leading 3-0 but scored seven runs in that frame.

The game ended after five innings because of the mercy rule.

Zach Beatty and Travis McGuire were the only Kentridge players to collect hits.
