The shifting definition of the Web browser | PandoDaily

browser_FEATUREThe Web comes in all shapes and sizes. Designers and developers are tasked with building sites capable of shifting from 3-inch smartphone displays to 92-inch (yes, really) ?smart? television sets and everywhere in between. Yet supporting an ever-expanding array of screen sizes is only half the battle. Developers also have to account for all kinds of Web browsers ? and there are more of them than you might think.

Most people probably think of Safari, Google Chrome, or Internet Explorer when they think ?Web browser.? (Assuming they know what a browser is in the first place, that is.) But a quick look at the home screen of any device can show that there are browsers hidden everywhere. Your Twitter client probably has a built-in browser. So does your read-later app, the Facebook app, your RSS reader, your social reading app, and so on. Browsers are everywhere, and they don?t always work as we might think.

First, why all of these apps have embedded browsers in the first place: They want users to stay within that app. This means that users are sticking with an app instead of bouncing around to a dedicated browser every time they want to view something that doesn?t reside in that particular app?s data silo, keeping the developer happy ? who doesn?t want their app to be used? ? and saving the user from having to constantly ?shift gears.?

Twitterrific, a Windows Phone -styled Twitter client for the iPhone and iPad, offers a prime example. One might expect that the iPad app?s embedded browser would use the entire screen, but it doesn?t. Users are instead treated to a cut-off view that uses maybe half of the iPad?s screen when held like a magazine. Suddenly the tablet-specific view doesn?t seem so appealing, as the aspect ratio and size are much different than designers probably anticipated.

This sizing problem is common across other embedded browsers, though not to the same extent. Tumblr?s iPhone app shows just a few more pixels on each Web page than Safari for iPhone, for example, while Google Chrome for iOS shows more than either. These differences are slight but noticeable, and go a long way towards making a Web page feel ?cramped? or just-right.

Then there are browsers that just don?t want to cooperate with websites. Prismatic, a social reading app, doesn?t play well with Quartz, the Atlantic?s global business website, for example. Quartz displays a ?this site uses technologies which aren?t supported by your browser? error every time I try to read an article in Prismatic, severely cramping the app?s ?read whatever interests you? style.

But, then, battling with technological differences between browsers isn?t anything new. It isn?t enough to build a site that displays properly in Google Chrome or Safari, which both use WebKit as a base ? the site needs to work in Internet Explorer, Firefox, and, to a lesser degree, Opera. Sites need to work for anyone who visits ? falling short of that, they need to work for as many people who visit as possible, and that means supporting the little niggles inherent with every major platform.

So, what?s the solution? Well, in all honesty, there probably isn?t one ? developers and designers have had to work with the limitations imposed by browser makers? whims for years now, and that doesn?t show any sign of changing. Some form of improved multi-tasking in iOS, which treats every app as a separate entity from the Web and other installed applications, might help a bit, but it?s far from a silver bullet.

Mobile didn?t just lead to the proliferation of different screen sizes. It also started to blur the line between what an ?app? and a ?browser? is, allowing developers to create their own little looking glasses, their own windows into the Web. While this is appealing to both users and developers for the reasons outlined above, it?s also a pain in the ass for developers. Which raises the question of whether or not we?ll ever truly have a uniform, completely optimized view of the Web.

Probably not.

Pakistan blast kills 20 Shia pilgrims in latest sectarian attack

QUETTA, Pakistan (Reuters) - A car bomb exploded on Sunday near a convoy of buses taking Pakistani Shia pilgrims to Iran, killing 20 people and wounding 24, officials said, the latest attack on the minority sect.

Witnesses said the blast occurred as the three buses were overtaking a car about 60 km (35 miles) west of Quetta, capital of sparsely populated Baluchistan province, site of many sectarian attacks, near the Iranian border.

"The bus next to us caught on fire immediately," said pilgrim Hussein Ali, 60. "We tried to save our companions but were driven back by the intensity of the heat."

An official at Mastung district hospital, said 20 people had been killed and 24 wounded.

Akbar Durrani, Baluchistan's home secretary, said rescue teams were trying to reach victims in the wreckage of the vehicles, one of which was still in flames some time after the attack. He said the death toll could rise.

A string of attacks on Shias underscores the government's inability to crack down on groups promoting sectarian violence.

In August, militants made passengers disembark from a bus in a northern province and shot 19 Shias dead after determining from their identity cards whether they were Shias or majority Sunnis.

New York-based Human Rights Watch has noted more than 320 Shias killed this year in Pakistan and said attacks were on the rise. It said the government's failure to catch or prosecute attackers suggested it was "indifferent" to the killings.

Pakistan has banned several militant groups that openly call for attacks on Shias. But their leaders move around openly, give interviews and often receive police protection. Rights groups say some groups have ties to Pakistani security agencies.

Pakistan is overwhelmingly Muslim, with most citizens Sunni, though about 20 percent of its 180 million population are Shia.

Obama touts Hagel, says no decision on defense secretary job

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama offered strong support for former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel as the potential next U.S. defense secretary but said in remarks aired on Sunday that he had not yet decided on a nominee for the Pentagon post.

Hagel is considered a leading candidate to replace outgoing Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, but the former Nebraska lawmaker has come under criticism for his record on Israel and for a comment that being gay was an inhibiting factor for being an ambassador.

"I've served with Chuck Hagel. I know him. He is a patriot. He is somebody who has done extraordinary work both in the United States Senate, somebody who served this country with valor in Vietnam," Obama told NBC's "Meet the Press" in an interview taped on Saturday and broadcast on Sunday.

Any nomination for defense secretary must be approved by the Senate where some lawmakers have voiced criticism about their former colleague.

"I think a lot of Republicans and Democrats are very concerned about Chuck Hagel's positions on Iran sanctions, his views toward Israel, Hamas and Hezbollah, and that there is wide and deep concern about his policies. All of us like him as a person," Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said.

"There would be very little Republican support for his nomination, at the end of the day, there will be very few votes," Graham said on Fox News Sunday.

Republican Senator Tom Coburn from Oklahoma said bluntly: "I cannot vote for Chuck Hagel."

Aside from his controversial statements, "he does not have the experience to manage a very large organization like the Pentagon," Coburn said on CBS' "Face the Nation." "If there's a place that we need great management it's the Pentagon."

Senator Richard Durbin, a Democrat from Illinois, said on the same television show that Hagel deserved "respect for the service he's given our country in the military and in the Senate" and should be given consideration. "He at least deserves a hearing and an opportunity," he said.

Obama said he had seen nothing that would disqualify Hagel.

The president said Hagel had apologized for his comments related to homosexuality, referred to by NBC's David Gregory in the interview.

"With respect to the particular comment that you quoted, he apologized for it," Obama said.

"And I think it's a testimony to what has been a positive change over the last decade in terms of people's attitudes about gays and lesbians serving our country. And that's something that I'm very proud to have led," he said.

Obama came out in favor of gay marriage in the middle of his re-election bid this year. Earlier in his term he presided over the end of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy that prohibited gay men and women from serving openly in the U.S. military.

Hagel, who left the Senate in 2008, has faced questions about his record on Israel.

Some of Israel's leading U.S. supporters contend that Hagel at times opposed Israel's interests, voting several times against U.S. sanctions on Iran, and made disparaging remarks about the influence of what he called a "Jewish lobby" in Washington.

Obama, who has strained relations with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has faced questions of his own from the American Jewish community about his approach to the U.S. ally.

Obama said Hagel was doing an "outstanding job" serving on an intelligence advisory board and gave no indication on when he would make his final decision about the defense chief job.

The president has already backed down once from a contentious nomination, choosing Democratic Senator John Kerry to replace Hillary Clinton as secretary of state rather than going with his presumed first choice, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice, whom many Republicans opposed after she made controversial remarks about the September 11 attacks on a U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans.

Tale of 2 cities: Homicides drop in NYC, leap in Chicago

By M. Alex Johnson, NBC News

Scott Olson / Getty Images

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, pictured at a flag-raising ceremony at the Chicago Police Academy in October, said this month that "we will not rest" until Chicago's growing homicide rate is reversed.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg was crowing.

"The number of murders this year will be lower than any time in recorded city history," Bloomberg said Friday in a statement announcing that homicides in the city this year had fallen to 414 ? the fewest since it started keeping such statistics in 1963.

About the same time Friday, Chicago police were trying to get the message out that their city hadn't actually recorded its 500th homicide this year, as was being reported. A few hours later, they had to backtrack and acknowledge that, yes, in fact, "the city has seen its 500th homicide for 2012."

That's right: There were more homicides this year in Chicago than in New York, a city with three times the population. That means Chicagoans were proportionally 3.7 times more likely to be homicide victims than New Yorkers were in 2012:

Overall, crime is down in Chicago in just about every category ? except the most devastating one.

"We've obviously seen, as a city, our shootings and our homicides going in a different direction," Mayor Rahm Emanuel said this month at a graduation ceremony for police recruits, vowing, "We will not rest" until that trend is reversed.

Grim milestone: Chicago records 500th homicide of 2012

Meanwhile, in New York, "we're preventing crimes before someone is killed," Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Friday.

New York didn't just reduce homicides ? it reduced them by 19.6 percent. And Chicago didn't just have more homicides ? it had 15.6 percent more.

Both figures are extraordinary. Last year, homicides fell by about 4 percent in New York, exactly in line with other U.S. cities with populations greater than 1 million, according to FBI figures. They fell in Chicago by just less than three-quarters of 1 percent.

While there's always the chance that the changes are just statistical flukes, two concrete factors appear to be at least partly responsible: money and priorities.

New York's police budget held steady in fiscal 2012, at about $4.6 billion.

Emanuel, facing a $300 million budget deficit, by contrast cut $67 million from the $1.3 billion police budget ? a 5 percent reduction that was down from his original proposal to cut police funding by 15 percent.

While Emanuel and Chicago Police Superintendent Garry?McCarthy said the cuts would help the police department become more efficient, Jens Ludwig, a criminal justice expert at the University of Chicago, said it was difficult "to think that you could have budget cuts like these and have no impact on crime and other aspects of public life."

Watch US News crime videos on NBCNews.com

"I have been really surprised at how little attention the local and state budget situation has received in discussions about the Chicago violence problem," Ludwig told NBC News on Friday.

The other factor is commitment, Ludwig said.?

"New York City seems to be exceptionally focused on getting illegal guns off the street," he said.

Ludwig drew an analogy to prosecution of drunken driving.

At one time, the official attitude was that "if the driver is lucky enough not to hurt anyone, it's no big deal," he said. "But (eventually) we started to realize drunk driving imposes probabilistic harm, and so we started to punish the risky behavior rather than focus on the luck of the draw about whether anyone happened to get hurt.

"New York City has taken that idea seriously for illegal gun carrying, recognizing that illegal guns on the street greatly increase the risk that an argument turns into a murder," he said.

Kelly, the New York police commissioner, stressed that point Friday, saying his officers had taken 8,000 weapons "out of the hands of people we stop, 800 of them illegal handguns."?

"We're preventing crimes before someone is killed and before someone else has to go to prison for murder or other serious crimes," he said.

New York City homicides, shootings at modern record lows

Bloomberg made a similar point, singling out what he called the city's renewed commitment to Operation Impact, a 2003 state initiative that pairs new police recruits with veteran officers in specific high-crime areas. The city's participation "reflects our commitment to doing everything possible to stop gun violence," he said.

Left unmentioned was the city's controversial stop-and-frisk policy, which allows officers to search someone as he or she exits a private building if they have a "reasonable suspicion" that the person is likely to commit a crime.

"I think there is some empirical basis to think that all those hundreds and thousands of stops and searches for illegal guns helps keep guns off the street and contributes to a lower homicide rate," Ludwig said.

But the policy is under legal challenge from civil liberties groups, which contend that police use it as a pretext to stop and search people without cause ? the great majority of them members of minority groups.

According to an analysis of raw arrest statistics by the nonprofit Center for Constitutional Rights, which opposes the policy, 84 percent of the 686,000 people stopped and searched in 2011 were African-American or Latino. Only 6 percent of the stops resulted in an arrest. And in only 2 percent of stops were illegal weapons or other contraband actually found.

Read the full report (.pdf)

Statistics like that make it worth asking "whether stop and frisk is worth the cost," Ludwig said. "All the stops come disproportionately to young, minority males."?

A trial date is set for March. In the meantime, Bloomberg said Friday, New York remains "the safest big city in America."

Spain doctors end strike over hospital privatization

MADRID (Reuters) - Doctors in Spain's Madrid region called off a strike on Friday after failing to halt plans to privatize six hospitals and dozens of clinics.

The Madrid regional government aims to save 200 million euros ($265 million) by putting the hospitals and clinics under private management. The region's elected assembly approved the plan on Thursday.

Spain has implemented tough austerity measures this year to help it reach a European Union-agreed budget deficit target and stave off a bailout. The country's 17 autonomous regions control their own spending on healthcare and education.

The strike lasted for five weeks, during which doctors only saw patients on Fridays. Rallies organized by healthcare unions in the capital drew thousands of doctors and their supporters.

Emergency services were not affected.

"We went on strike because we want to stop the new ... plan and that has not changed," said Belen Padilla from one union, the Association of Madrid Doctors and Specialists.

Coach cleared of child porn wants files sealed

MANKATO, Minn. (AP) ? Minnesota State University, Mankato, head football coach Todd Hoffner, who was cleared of child pornography charges last month that stemmed from videos found on his cellphone of his naked children clowning around after a bath, is suing to keep the police investigative reports sealed.

Hoffner has been taken off administrative leave, but he hasn't been reinstated as head coach and is facing a 20-day, unpaid school suspension in January for unspecified reasons. He sued the state and Blue Earth County earlier this month in an effort to keep the police reports private, after a Twin Cities television station asked to see them. The lawsuit seeks a temporary restraining order that would keep anyone from disseminating the investigative file.

District Court Judge Krista Jass ruled last week that the reports will remain private until they can be reviewed, the Mankato Free Press reported (http://bit.ly/ZFYA0c ),

Jass ordered prosecutors to gather all investigative reports and turn them over to Hoffner's attorney, Jim Fleming. He'll be allowed to file a sealed list of information that he believes should be kept from the public. After receiving Fleming's list, Jass will decide what should remain sealed.

Fleming said in a court affidavit that releasing the information would harm Hoffner.

"Plaintiff Mr. Hoffner has an ongoing investigation relative to his employment as a head football coach at (MSU)," Fleming's affidavit said. "Release of private non-public data could irreparably harm (Hoffner) with respect to that investigation that a civil lawsuit for damages would not fully compensate."

Hoffner was charged with child porn possession in August after school officials found videos of his naked children on his work-issued cellphone, which he had turned in to be repaired. Jass dismissed the criminal charges last month after concluding that the short videos of his children acting silly after a bath were not child porn and showed nothing illegal.

Last week, the university said it was suspending Hoffner without pay for 20 days starting Jan. 7. In its announcement, the university didn't say why it was suspending Hoffner, and school officials have declined to specify the reason.

An attorney for the union representing Hoffner has said the suspension is being challenged. The university also said last week it is still investigating a complaint against Hoffner.

Fleming told the newspaper that he wants the information sealed to protect Hoffner's privacy. Investigators went through computer files and took pictures of items in his house.

"We're not hiding anything from anybody," Fleming said.

Judge approves Toyota's settlement

12 hrs.

SAN FRANCISCO --?A U.S. judge granted preliminary approval on Friday to Toyota Motor Corp's $1.1 billion settlement of a class-action lawsuit brought by consumers who lost value on their cars due to sudden, unintended acceleration.

U.S. District Judge James Selna in Santa Ana, Calif., scheduled a hearing in June for final approval of the deal, which was announced this week. It provides $500 million in cash for plaintiffs, plus installation of break override systems and a customer support program valued at about $600 million combined.

"Settlement will likely serve the interests of the class members better than litigation," Selna wrote.

Plaintiff lawyer Steve Berman said he was pleased with the favorable comments in Selna's order. Toyota spokeswoman Julie Hamp said the company was gratified by Selna's approval of the settlement, "which will provide value to our customers and provides an extra measure of confidence in their vehicles."

About 16 million Toyota, Lexus and Scion vehicles sold in the United States spanning the model years 1998 to 2010 are covered by the settlement. Company officials have maintained that the electronic throttle control system was not at fault, instead blaming ill-fitting floor mats and sticky gas pedals.

A study by federal safety officials at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and NASA found no link between reports of unintended acceleration and Toyota's electronic throttle control system.

Toyota, the No. 3 automaker in the U.S. market, admitted no fault in proposing the settlement, one of the largest U.S. mass class-action litigations in the automotive sector. One plaintiff's law firm called it the largest settlement in U.S. history involving auto defects.

However, the deal does not cover wrongful death or injury lawsuits, believed to total more than 300 according to a Toyota filing in June.

Toyota's recall of its vehicles between 2009 and 2011 relating to the unintended acceleration issue hurt its reputation for reliability and safety.

But the automaker's sales were up almost 29 percent in 2012 through November, compared with a 14 percent increase in the industry, and Toyota's share of the U.S. market has risen to 14.4 percent from 12.7 percent in 2011.

In his order on Friday, Selna said the settlement is fair, given the risks of further litigation and the complicated legal rulings he has issued throughout the case.

"Some of these rulings have been favorable to plaintiffs, some have been favorable to Toyota," Selna wrote. "Were the parties to proceed to a fully litigated result, virtually any outcome would face the risk of uncertainty upon appellate review of these rulings."

Selna also approved up to $200 million in attorneys' fees, saying the amount falls within 25 percent of the total settlement which is the benchmark established by appellate law.

The case is In re: Toyota Motor Corp. Unintended Acceleration Marketing, Sales Practices and Products Liability Litigation, U.S. District Court, Central District of California, No. 10-ml-02151.?

The Difference Between Payday Loans & Loan Sharks | Financial ...

There are many critics who quickly label payday lenders ?loan sharks? without realizing just how drastic the difference is between them. The availability of these payday advances has actually made true loan sharks scarce, which is safer for borrowers in desperate needs of money.

1. Business Operation

Loan Sharks operate only in cash. They?ll work with people who don?t have bank accounts. Since there is no written contract, no banking paper trail it?s very hard to track the actual interest rate and also very hard to prove

A Payday Loan requires a bank account so interest rates and fees can be tracked. Now online payday loans are available and you can keep track of your loans and when you?ve paid them.

2. Typical Client

Loan sharks actually prefer to work with small and medium business owners. These customers are more likely to possess assets that could be seized if the loan is in default, or even worse, the business owners themselves was forced to participate crime by assisting the loan sharks by laundering money. Gamblers are also a favorite customer, and so are other criminals since you can?t get a bank loan to finance illegal operation like selling drugs.

Payday Loans are used by working adults who need emergency cash. There are several reasons why someone would need one. An unexpected car problem that needs to be fixed so you can go to work. Emergency travel expenses due to a family member being sick and a broken heater in the middle of a harsh winter are all reasons people use payday loans to help support themselves when things are tight.

3. Up-Front Collateral

Loan Sharks frequently require an asset to hold onto before the loan is given. It can be anything from a television set, stereo or anything of value that they can keep if you don?t pay the loan back or you pay it back late.

Direct payday lenders sometimes hold onto a personal check for the loan amount plus the fee. More commonly, they?ll record your bank account and routing number and debit the amount you owe. An established lender would never ask you to leave your TV with them.

4. Interest Rate

Loan shark interest rates are practically limitless. They operate illegally so they can dictate how much you have to pay them back

Payday loans are controlled by state laws

5. Late and Missing Payments

Loan Shark: Broken thumbs

Payday loans assess additional fees for late payments, like you would get if you missed a credit card payment. They are also controlled by state laws so the additional fees are limited and you can expect consistency from lender to lender. If you miss payments or default on a loan many states have programs so you can set up a payment plan.

6. The Real Difference Between Payday Loan and Loan Shark:

The main difference, which most people forget, is that payday lending is a legitimate business and loan sharking is illegal.

These services allow people to get a payday loan when money is tight. If you?re considering getting a guaranteed cash advance, make sure you only borrow what you need. Loanshark.co is a resource for consumers to report illegal loan sharks as well as financial scams.

Meaning on the Brain: How Your Mind Organizes Reality

They called him ?Diogenes the Cynic,? because ?cynic? meant ?dog-like,? and he had a habit of basking naked on the lawn while his fellow philosophers talked on the porch. While they debated the mysteries of the cosmos, Diogenes preferred to soak up some rays ? some have called him the Jimmy Buffett of ancient Greece.

Anyway, one morning, the great philosopher Plato had a stroke of insight. He caught everyone?s attention, gathered a crowd around him, and announced his deduction: ?Man is defined as a hairless, featherless, two-legged animal!? Whereupon Diogenes abruptly leaped up from the lawn, dashed off to the marketplace, and burst back onto the porch carrying a plucked chicken ? which he held aloft and shouted, ?Behold: I give you? Man!?

I?m sure Plato was less than thrilled at this stunt, but the story reminds us that these early philosophers were still hammering out the most basic tenets of the science we now know as taxonomy: The grouping of objects from the world into abstract categories. This technique of chopping up reality wasn?t invented in ancient Greece, though. In fact, as a recent study shows, it?s fundamental to the way our brains work.

Chunks of reality

At the most basic level, we don?t really perceive separate objects at all ? we perceive our nervous systems? responses to a boundless flow of electromagnetic waves and biochemical reactions. Our brains slot certain neural response patterns into sensory pathways we call ?sight,? ?smell? and so on ? but abilities like synesthesia and echolocation show that even the boundaries between our senses can be blurry.

Semantic Space. Image: Gallant lab, UC Berkeley

Semantic Space. Image: Gallant lab, UC Berkeley

Still, our brains are talented at picking out certain chunks of sensory experience and associating those chunks with other stimuli. For instance, if you hear purring and feel fur rubbing against your leg, your brain knows to associate that sound and feeling with the fluffy four-legged object you see at your feet ? and to group that whole multisensory chunk under the heading of ?cat.?

What?s more, years of cat experience have taught you that it makes no sense to think of a cat as if it were a piece of furniture, or a truck, or a weather balloon. In other words, an encounter with a cat carries a particular set of meanings for you ? and those meanings determine which areas of your brain will perk up in the presence of a feline.

But where?s the category ?cat? in the brain? And where?s it situated in relation to, say, ?dog? or ?giraffe? ?or just ?mammal?? A team of neuroscientists led by Alexander Huth at UC Berkeley?s Gallant lab decided they?d answer these questions in the most thorough way possible: By capturing brain responses to every kind of object they could dig up.

Chunks in the brain

Those Gallant lab folks are no slouches ? you might remember them as the lab that constructed ?mind videos? of entire scenes?from neural activity in the visual cortex. This time, though, the lab?s ambitions were even broader.

Semantic Map. Image: Gallant lab, UC Berkeley

Semantic Map. Image: Gallant lab, UC Berkeley

A research team led by Alex Huth showed volunteers hours of video footage of thousands of everyday objects and scenes ? from cats and birds to cars and thunderstorms ? as the subjects sat in an fMRI scanner. Then the researchers matched up the volunteers? brain activity not only to each object they saw, but also to a whole tree of nested object categories: A taxonomy of the brain?s taxonomy. A vision of a ?continuous semantic space,? where thousands of objects and actions are represented in terms of others.

Huth?s team collected volunteers? reactions to more than 1,300 objects and categories, and arranged these brain responses not only into a tree of object and action categories, but into a map of response gradients across the whole surface of the brain.

And as you can see from the color gradients in that tree diagram to the right (which is also available as an interactive online app), the relationships among our brains? categories are multidimensional. Objects may be more or less ?animal-like,? more or less ?man-made,? and so on ? and in fact, the researchers say they expect to find more subtle response dimensions that gauge an object?s size and speed.

Association and meaning

All this talk of ?dimensions of association? points back to a far more profound idea about how our brains work: We understand the meaning of an object in terms of the meanings of other objects ? other chunks of reality to which our brains have assigned certain characteristics. In the brain?s taxonomy, there are no discrete entries or ?files? ? just associations that are more strongly or more weakly correlated with other associations.

And that idea itself raises deeper quandaries: If associations define what an object or action ?is,? as some neuroscientists have argued, then why does the concept of meaning ? semantic representation ? need to enter the picture at all? Instead of being a special type of mental function, might ?meaning? itself simply be another word for ?association??

The answer to that question won?t be a simple one to find, at least for the foreseeable future. ?I don?t think it?s possible to make a conclusive claim about that from fMRI data,? says Jack Gallant, the lab?s director; ?and anyone who tells you otherwise is mistaken.?

A single three-dimensional pixel ? an fMRI voxel ? represents the activity of around one million neurons, Gallant explains; and at that resolution, it?s impossible to say what exactly the neural activity is encoding. Meaning could depend on association, association might depend on semantic coding, or the relationship between the two might be more nuanced than we can conceive right now.

Whatever that relationship turns out to be, the implication remains: In our brains, meaning and association go hand-in-hand. In the brain, even our most abstract concepts depend on our own ?real-world experiences. That?s an idea that?s infuriated Plato and his followers far more than Diogenes? plucked chicken ? but as Diogenes demonstrated on that long-ago morning, real-world evidence trumps speculation in the end.

You?re in the correct place if you?re concerned about you can grow personally. In this article we will discuss many self improvement tips. You can easily implement them into your life and begin to make the changes you desire.

Make sure you treat all people with respect, no matter who they are, how powerful they are or what benefits you can obtain from them. How you treat someone says a lot about the kind of character you possess.

Making yourself number one, and not overextending yourself, is very important. You are responsible for your own personal happiness, but this shouldn?t be at the expense of other people?s feelings. If you remain true to yourself while honoring your personal code of ethics, you will be better prepared to develop yourself more fully.

The fact is that we can never be the absolute best at a single thing, but we can aspire to be an inspiration to others in our fields. Do what you can to improve yourself in your work, and you should feel more confident.

Keep looking for new challenges you are interested in. This can create new possibilities in your life. It is possible to gain new abilities and new perspectives. You could end up creating something new or doing something no one else has done. Be your own greatest inspiration, instead of following in the footsteps of others.

You can use your willpower to make your life more positive, which means that the wishes you have for others can impact your circumstances, as well. For this reason, it is important to wish only positive things for the people in your life. If you try to remain positive in all aspects of your life, you will not be as likely to get dragged down by sadness, anger and other negative feelings.

You only need to remember one key to live and lead a successful life. It is important to play an active role in your own life story, instead of just watching it pass by. Being alive means learning, exploring, and forever enhancing your own personal development.

Taking a few risks can help you feel happier. It is not uncommon for an individual to avoid the feeling of rejection or failure while at at the same time, leading a life that they feel is confining and unfulfilled. Taking some chances is a key component of happiness. It demonstrates courage and a lust for life.

Let your personal principles guide your self improvement. Your personality is strongly shaped and supported by these principles. Having a good foundation based on your core principles will benefit your sense of self esteem. This practice will encourage consistency, a valuable character trait to keep.

Getting and staying healthy is one of the most important parts of self improvement. Eating right and working out are part of the equation, but motivation is the real key. If you feel healthy, then you will always be at the top of your game, which makes it easier to meet your other personal development goals.

If you experience anxiety in social situations, ask a friend to join you at the movie theater. This gives you the opportunity to engage in a social activity that does not have a lot of risk. In addition, it enables you to accustom yourself to being in an environment with many other people.

If you take care of your health you will be able to get the most out of your self improvement. Achieving your self improvement goals is more likely if you keep your energy levels high by getting a sufficient amount of sleep, exercising on a regular basis, and maintaining a nutritious diet. Although it seems so simple, this can be a struggle for some people.

Writing out your goals will help you develop your own plan for personal growth. Find things you want to possess, a career you want to pursue or a quality you want to acquire. Next, think of different ideas and resources that could help you to achieve that goal. Next, place yourself in scenarios where that is possible. When you tackle it methodically, you give yourself a better chance at succeeding.

Now that you know some things to help you personally develop yourself, feel better about starting out! Self improvement is a goal that requires continuous searching for inspiration and new ideas, but once you begin it is much easier to keep learning and growing.

P.S.-If you love personal development and would love to make an extra $1000/day blogging with it, find out how my 2 friends are helping thousands of people make money about their passions ===> Discover why this game-changer is the most bad-ass personal development plan in the industry?s history!

Eric Chua : Life, Business and Real Estate in Singapore ? Learn ...

Investing your money in commercial property can be a profitable endeavor for a variety of reasons. However, you need to decide whether an investment is right for you. The more you find out, the more money you can make through commercial real estate. These tips make a great starting point that can help you learn more about commercial real estate.

Lower the risk of default by eliminating as many things that can be labeled ?event of default? as you can prior to negotiating a commercial property lease. The less behaviors you have that constitute default, the less likely it is that you?ll have to deal with a tenant?s default. You want to avoid any circumstances that could lead to this occurrence.

Understand how the firm you?re looking to work with conducts its business and measures results. Find out how they figure out your space requirements, their important selection criteria of the property, strategy in negotiations and other things that will matter in your transaction. These are all things you should know before you sign with a firm.

TIP! Focus on a single investment each time. You should focus on a certain investment type, such as office buildings, apartment complexes, buildable land or retail properties.

Always think ahead when considering a real estate investment. Every property is eventually going to need maintenance and repairs, and you need to consider what potential properties are going to cost you over the duration of your use. You may have to update the wiring, or install a new roof, for example. All buildings have these kinds of requirements, depending on the specific building, some may require more repairs than others. You must consider these requirements, and have a plan in place to handle them over the long haul.

Regardless of whether you are buying or selling the property, it is in your best interest to negotiate. It is important that your concerns and opinions are heard and recognized by the other parties; you must always put forth the effort to ensure fair pricing for the commercial property.

When dealing in commercial real estate, it is important to stay patient and calm. Do not go into an investment out of haste. You could end up finding that the property falls short of your total goals, making it a regretful purchase. Plan to keep your eye on your market for as long as a year if you want to find the right investment.

TIP! Be sure to see and enter into good deals. Veterans in the commercial real estate market can spot a lucrative deal very quickly.

Secure appropriate financing before going forward. There is a big difference between a home loan and a commercial loan. They are better in a number of ways. While commercial loans generally require a more significant down payment, lenders are usually more flexible about where or from whom you get that down payment.

When interviewing potential brokers, ask them to tell you about their experience level with the type of commercial investments you are interested in. Make sure that they are experts in the area in which you are selling or buying. Entering into an exclusive contract with that particular broker is a good idea.

Maintaining and cleaning commercial properties can be costly, but occasionally it is possible to save money. You are only potentially responsible for paying for cleanup if you held an ownership interest in a property. It can be incredibly expensive to dispose of waste that is not environmentally friendly. Inquire at an environmental assessment company about obtaining an environmental report. They might cost a bit more up front, but they can end up saving you much in the long run.

TIP! If you are signing a commercial real estate lease, be hesitant if you are asked to sign a standard lease form. The largest real estate companies are known to fill their lease documentation with wordy clauses including hidden requirements.

As the beginning of this article already mentioned, there are many reasons for you to consider investing in commercial real estate, all of which require some additional knowledge on the topic. The tactics presented here provide a groundwork of information that you can use to break into the commercial real estate investing scene.

(AP) ? Egypt's Islamist president proclaimed the country's newly adopted constitution as the dawning of a "new republic" in a television address Wednesday, calling on the opposition to join a dialogue with him after a month of violent turmoil and focus on repairing a damaged economy.

Mohammed Morsi sought to present the Islamist-drafter charter as the turning of a historic page for Egypt, but his speech did little to ease the suspicions of those who fear he and his Muslim Brotherhood are entrenching their power. He offered no concrete gestures to an opposition that has so far rejected his dialogue and vowed to fight the constitution.

Instead, with a triumphalist tone, he presented the constitution, which was approved by nearly 64 percent of voters in a referendum that ended last weekend, as creating a democracy with balanced powers between branches of government and political freedoms.

"We don't want to return to an era of one opinion and fake, manufactured majorities. The maturity and consciousness (of voters) heralds that Egypt has set on a path of democracy with no return," Morsi said. "Regardless of the results, for the sake of building the nation, efforts must unite. There is no alternative to a dialogue that is now a necessity."

The opposition says the constitution allows a dictatorship of the majority ? which Islamists have won with repeated election victories the past two years. It says the charter's provisions for greater implementation of Islamic law, or Shariah, would allow Islamists who hold the presidency and overwhelmingly dominate the temporary legislature to restrict civil rights and limit the freedoms of minorities and women.

Opponents also say the low turnout in the referendum, just under 33 percent, undermines the document's legitimacy.

The main opposition National Salvation Front said it would study Morsi's speech to see if his call for dialogue is serious. But it dismissed a "national dialogue" body that he launched before the results emerged as "farcical and simply theater." The dialogue is mainly between Morsi and other Islamists.

"The president is talking to himself," said Hussein Abdel-Ghani, a leading figure in the Front told a press conference after Morsi's speech. He said the opposition would only enter "real and effective" talks, suggesting Morsi was aiming to assuage the United States, which has called for compromise and talks, without offering real substance. The Front said it will continue to be in opposition to the current rulers who "seek to establish a repressive regime in the name of religion."

Morsi's prerecorded address was his first speech since Dec. 6 after laying low amid the turmoil leading up to the referendum. It came a day after official referendum results were announced, formally bringing into effect the first constitution since the ouster of authoritarian leader Hosni Mubarak in February 2011.

Morsi's main message: it is time to put aside differences and start "the epic battle for construction and production."

He said he had asked his Prime Minister Hesham Kandil to make changes to his Cabinet to meet the "needs of the coming period" and to introduce measure to facilitate investment. But he made no gesture of inviting the opposition to join the reshuffled government.

"As we set on a new phase moving from the first republic to the second republic, a republic that has this constitution as its strong base ... I renew my pledge to respect the law and constitution," Morsi said, repeating his oath of office based on the new charter.

The line signaled the formal end of the political system in place in Egypt since 1952, when a military coup pushed out the Western-backed king and Egypt was declared a republic.

Morsi acknowledged the "respectable" proportion that voted against the constitution, but gave no nod to the concerns opponents have over the charter. Liberals and Christians withdrew from the assembly writing the document, complaining that the Islamist majority was railroading it through. Opponents worry about provisions giving Muslim clerics a say over legislation, subordinating many civil rights to Shariah and providing little protection for women's rights.

Morsi declared the constitution Egypt's first to be drafted and passed through a popularly approved process, saying it protects human dignity, enshrines moderation, protects freedoms and ensures rights to work, education and health.

His implicit message to those who complain that the Muslim Brotherhood, from which he hails, is dominating government was that he could be trusted and that in the end, voters can remove them.

"God only knows I make no decision except for God, and for the interest of the nation," Morsi said. "As you know, I am not a lover of authority or someone who is keen to monopolize power. Power is with the people."

He defended decrees he issued in November granting himself sweeping powers, which sparked a wave of protests. He said the decrees, since revoked, were necessary to swiftly push through the constitution to a referendum to end instability. The opposition had urged him to postpone the vote.

The administrator of a Facebook page seen as a major mobilizer for the uprising that forced out Mubarak dismissed Morsi's speech, saying, "His words don't match his deeds."

Abdel-Rahman Mansour, of the "We are All Khaled Said" page, said Morsi had violated earlier promises to respect processes and institutions and is now calling for a dialogue after rushing through a constitution that was highly disputed.

"You can't talk about a second republic when it is based on a constitution that has no national consensus," Mansour said. "He says he doesn't want power but acts differently."

Under the new constitution, the Islamist-dominated Shura Council, the traditionally toothless upper house, was granted temporary legislative powers and began its work on Wednesday. It will legislate until elections for a new lower house are held within two months. Morsi has had legislative powers for months since a court dissolved the law-making lower house of parliament.

Morsi filled out the Shura Council this week by appointing 90 members to bring it to its full 270 members, adding a few non-Islamist members to the body recommended by the national dialogue. But the main liberal and secular opposition groups rejected the appointments as "political bribery."

The parliamentary affairs minister, Mohammed Mahsoub, told Wednesday's session that the government will prepare new legislation for the Shura Council to discuss, including a law to regulate the upcoming parliamentary elections, anti-corruption laws, and laws to organize Egypt's efforts to recover money from corrupt Mubarak-era officials.

Mahsoub said such bills can be ready as early as next week, when the council convenes again for its regular working session.

Nasser Amin, the head of the Center for the Independence of the Judiciary and Legal Profession, said that now the conflict has moved from dueling street protests between the regime and opposition to "a new phase of legal disputes over legislation and control of state institutions."

"This is the most critical phase," he said, "and the battle won't be very clear to regular people."

5 Healthy Eating Tips to Banish Acne - Health News and Views ...

Think you are the only person in the universe dealing with adult acne? Well, you?ve got company. Clinical acne affects?45% of women ages 21 to 30, 26% of women ages 31 to 40, and 12% of women ages 41 to 50, according to a study by Massachusetts General Hospital.

Why do blemishes continue to linger post-puberty? Stress, hormones, cosmetics, and interestingly, diet have been speculated as potential causes. While the link between food and acne is still controversial?studies linking diet to acne are small and not conclusive?dietary changes may help; they seemed to work for me.

After suffering a severe and persistent bout of acne during college, I began researching alternative treatment methods and stumbled upon several small studies and natural healing books that discussed how changing your diet could help acne. Frustrated and willing to try anything, I adjusted my diet. I cut back on dairy, sugar, and wheat, and ate more raw fruits and vegetables. To my surprise, it really did improve the condition of my skin.

If you have blemishes way past your teenage years, try these diet tips to help calm your complexion.

Eat an avocado: A study in Lipids in Health and Disease suggested that food rich in healthy fats (think omega-3s) could help reduce acne lesions in addition to improving mental outlook. Snack on avocados, raw nuts and seeds, olives and olive oil, and fish, such as wild Alaskan salmon and sardines, to up your intake.

?Limit dairy: One hotly debated hypothesis says that dairy can aggravate acne; there are strong opinions on both sides. In the September 2011 issue of Dermatology World, the?magazine?of the American Academy of Dermatology, William Danby, MD, division of dermatology at Dartmouth Medical School, said, ?In patients who have no genetic background for acne, dairy plays no role whatsoever. It will?not give them acne. But for those who have a propensity for acne and are susceptible to the effects of dairy, it can make their acne much worse.?

For me, cutting out dairy seemed to play the biggest role in reducing my blemishes, which incidentally do run in my family. Curse you Mom and Dad! Either way, try your own personal two-week trial and see if it makes a difference for you.

?Amp up zinc:?Zinc is vital for the structure and function of cell membranes. A small Turkish study found that participants with acne were more likely to be zinc-deficient than those without acne. Good sources of zinc are meat, eggs, mushrooms, whole grain products, and oysters.

?Pick the right carbs: Refined grains and white flour in breads, pastas, bagels, and muffins can cause a quick spike in blood sugar, which may contribute to acne. On the other side, eating low glycemic index foods could improve your skin. Eat quinoa, brown rice, barley, and sweet potato to satisfy your carb cravings without aggravating your complexion.

Focus on vitamin A:?This fat-soluble vitamin is necessary for healthy skin and a study in Clinical and Experimental Dermatology suggests that vitamin A supplementation can improve acne conditions in patients. Fill up on sweet potatoes, kale, spinach, and carrots to reap the benefits.

I'm the Young Chick In Aqua Aerobics | xoJane

?You know, you really need to get actual exercise. Walking from the living room to the kitchen does not count.??

I?ve had that exact conversation twice: Once with my grandmother, who was getting noticeably weaker and developing a habit of falling down in her driveway. And once with myself, a couple of months ago, while I was eating a sandwich and watching Parks and Rec. It wasn?t a proud moment.

I don?t know about you, but I have kicks where I really, really want to exercise, and then periods where all I want to do is loaf with my cat. Except on Wednesdays, when I suit up and join the dozen or so moms and grandmoms at my gym for a little something I like to call aqua aerobics.

image

Doing my best Esther Williams for Lands End.

Yes, in our ragtag crew, I am one of just a few young women who get wet to get their heart rate up, and not the other way around.

I came to the class after a long summer away from exercise. I had sprained my ankle in a bootcamp aerobics class, where -- at 6:30am, twice a week -- I huffed and puffed my chunky butt alongside legit athletes in triathlon and marathon commemorative t-shirts. I have rarely known embarrassment as immediate and awful as being the fat girl crying in gym class AGAIN. So I figured water aerobics, with its images of cutesy grannies in skirted suits and floral swimcaps, might be more my speed.

What I didn?t realize is that aqua fitness is not joking around. This business will whip you into shape, leaving you exhausted after to sleep the slumber of tiny babies snuggled in a cozy papoose of strength and cardio training. First of all, the class is taught by one of my favorite people ever -- Bill Junius, a huge bald dude who always wears a black polo and white sneakers while demonstrating the moves on the deck. He has the class running, jumping, pushing buoys?in the water, all while yelling, ?STRONG! POWERFUL! MIGHTY! WARRIORS!? at us. Have you ever tried to lift yourself out of the pool continuously for 60 seconds? I simultaneously do and don?t recommend it. Your arms will be noodles by the end.

Every time a newbie shows up to the class, they are skeptical, like I was. ?Do you really get a workout here?? they ask dubiously. Check them out 20 minutes later, and they?re hanging on the deck, panting, because it?s frickin? HARD to do mountain climbers on the side of the pool for minutes on end. It is HARD to do underwater triceps kicks with more than a foot of foam resisting you.?

Turns out, the exercises we?ve been telling our grandparents to do so they don?t keel over? They?re actually awesome for people of all ages and abilities. The American Heart Association recommends?that everyone gets at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week -- that goes for kids, your great-grandpa in a wheelchair, everybody.?

And if, like me, you?re the lady who grabs a wall spot in yoga class because you?d rather tip into something than someone, a workout with a little give is actually smarter, says Bill, genius trainer and wearer of Santa hats during class. ?It?s good for everybody because water is very forgiving. It?s comforting. But water resistance is exercise. You have the choice to increase the intensity. It isn?t a social class -- it?s a workout.?

?Oh, why, George, from this angle you can barely tell my minimizer suit makes my tits smaller than my belly!?

I?m not the only young person who thinks so. There are a couple of other young women in my class -- some bigger, some smaller, one with the best eyebrows I?ve ever seen on a human being (not exercise related, but props where props are due!). And it?s not just in the pool. My friend Meghan stayed on dry land and did senior yoga to recover from a traumatic injury when she was just a youngin?. Not only did it help her get some movement and balance back, but it improved her memory, as well. The fact that some of her more mature classmates fell asleep in savasana was just a cute bonus.?

So why does gentler exercise seem like lesser exercise, when it all helps you live longer? Do people think it just takes less effort? Because I can tell you: I can run a mile, be done in 10 minutes and be crying at the end, swearing to redevote my life to bread. Or I can spend an hour in my suit (can I recommend Lands End athletic swimsuits to the chesty and/or round among us? Because mine is better than any sports bra I?ve ever had), work up a sweat and be ready to hit the gym again tomorrow. Because sometimes exercise needs to be fun. Sometimes you need a little camaraderie. And sometimes you?ve got to respect your elders, and recognize they know a good workout when they see one.

In Afghanistan?s first green-on-blue attack since September, a female Afghan officer has shot and killed a US military adviser outside Kabul?s police headquarters, a senior police official said. NATO soures have confirmed the Kabul shooting death.

An investigation into the shooting is underway, Interior Ministry spokesperson Sediq Seidiqqi said in an interview with AFP. The shooter was detained by her fellow officers after the incident, Sidiqqi added. Afghan and ISAF officials are reportedly working to confirm that the woman is a police officer.

The dead adviser was a contractor whose name and nationality are being withheld, NATO command spokesperson US Air Force Lt. Col. Lester T. Carroll told AP.

It is currently unclear if the contractor?s death was intentional or accidental, deputy Police Chief Mohammad Daoud Amin said.

The shooting came just hours after an Afghan police officer opened fire on five colleagues at a checkpoint in the country's north. The attacker then stole their weapons, and fled to join the Taliban, the local deputy provincial governor said.

In mid-September, three similar attacks took place in Afghanistan over a single weekend, killing eight NATO troops.

More than 60 coalition troops were killed in Afghanistan in 2012, a dramatic increase from the 35 killed last year. The violence comes ahead of the coalition?s planned pullout in 2014.

Police officer among 2 fatally shot in Houston

HOUSTON (AP) ? A traffic stop turned into a fatal shooting on Christmas Eve when a gunman killed a police officer and bystander in the parking lot of a Houston body shop, police said.

The confrontation followed a chase that began shortly before 9 a.m. Monday when the suspect sped off in his car rather than pull over as an officer had requested, Houston police spokesman John Cannon said. As the suspect fled, he sideswiped a white truck, which also took off after him, he said.

The suspect and the white truck eventually pulled into a nearby Maaco body shop, where Bellaire Police Department Cpl. Jimmie Norman approached the vehicle. Cannon said an argument apparently erupted, and the suspect pulled out a .380 caliber handgun and shot Norman.

"The saddest thing is that the officer, who is deceased, didn't have the opportunity to pull his weapon and defend himself," Cannon said. "It happened that fast."

A man then walked out of the body shop, and the suspect shot him, Cannon said.

Other officers arrived at the scene, where they found Norman lying on the ground and the suspect next to him, holding a gun, he said.

"They are immediately fired upon, and those two officers then returned fire," Cannon said.

The suspect was shot but fled on foot, Cannon said. He hid under a parked truck, but officers followed a trail of blood and arrested him.

"This suspect murdered a police officer and murdered an innocent bystander," Cannon said.

Norman, 53, worked for the Bellaire Police Department for 23 years and was the first of its officers to be shot in the line of duty, Bellaire police spokesman Robert Beran said.

"We're devastated by his loss. We're devastated by what this has done to his family," Bellaire Police Chief Byron Holloway told reporters at a news conference.

The identities of the bystander and suspect have not yet been released.

The parking lot of the body shop remained cordoned off with yellow police tape hours after the shootings. Officers milled around, collecting evidence and discussing the incident. The owners of a nearby auto parts store closed up early for Christmas, although other stores in the strip mall remained open as people rushed in for last-minute holiday errands.

Stephanie Pacheco, who works at the auto parts store, said she saw the officer get out of his patrol car in the parking lot next door and approach the driver. The officer opened the suspect's car door and tried to pull him out, she told the Houston Chronicle.

That's when the suspect opened fire, she said. The officer fell down, and the suspect continued firing shots in other directions, Pacheco said.

"This is senseless, ridiculous and needs to stop," Pacheco said. "I'm tired of seeing people die. It's a sad thing."

The bystander was shot at close range and died at the scene, Cannon said. It wasn't clear why the man stepped outside the body shop or whether he was an employee or a customer, he added. Norman was rushed to a hospital and died there.

The suspect was in critical but stable condition at a Houston hospital. Cannon said he is expected to survive.

Houston and Bellaire police and the Harris County District Attorney's office are investigating. Cannon said the suspect likely would face a multitude of charges, including capital murder of a police officer.
