Lower summer energy costs and get a facelift for your home | Life ...

During summer, many of us look forward to fun-filled days at the pool or beach, but we definitely don?t look forward to exorbitantly high cooling bills during the heat of the season.

A typical single-family home shells out $ 2,200 in annual energy costs, according a recent study by the U.S. Department of Energy?s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. And according to the Laboratory?s website, if a house has central air conditioning, even though the system is only used a few months out of the year, it is most likely the single biggest consumer of electricity, driving annual air conditioning costs that can exceed a shocking $ 1,000.

However, there are a number of ways you can improve the energy-efficient aspects of your home and save on electricity costs.

Seal the deal

According to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), one of the most cost-effective ways to improve energy efficiency in homes is to seal and insulate windows and doors. Often, this means replacing old, leaky, sticky, poorly performing windows and doors. A typical home that replaces its single-paned, clear glass windows with energy-efficient windows can realize up to $ 494 in annual savings, according to the EPA.

?Windows are a wonderful source of natural light, but if they are old, they can act as giant heat lamps in the summer, allowing the sun?s heat into a home,? says David Harrison, chief marketing office of Champion Windows, one of the nation?s leading home improvement companies. ?By installing our Comfort 365 Replacement Windows, homeowners can help shrink their cooling bills. Champion?s Double hung replacement windows exceed ENERGY STAR rating requirements by an average of 42 percent for Solar Heat Gain, which is the measure of the sun?s heat that comes through your window. Champion windows also help keep the cool air in and still let in natural sunlight ? without the heat.?

For more energy saving window tips check out the U.S. Department of Energy?s website or Champion Window?s Energy Efficient Replacement Windows at www.championwindow.com.

On the side

Another great way to cut costs is to increase insulation by installing energy-efficient siding. Vinyl siding and energy-efficient underlayment can increase a home?s R-value, a measure of insulation?s ability to resist heat traveling through it. The higher the R-value, the better the thermal performance of the insulation. By increasing the R-value, homeowners can save more than 20 percent on their electricity bills, according to energysavers.gov.

?Installing an energy-efficient siding system, including ENERGY STAR rated insulation board, can help insulate your home against the heat, reduce the amount of air flow into your house, making it easier to keep cool air in during the summer,? says Harrison. ?At Champion, our customers have told us they were pleasantly surprised to see a decrease in their energy bills after their siding installation.?

Other ways to improve energy efficiency and lower summer electric bills include:

* Increasing insulation in attics

* Making sure you have proper roof ventilation

* Sealing air conditioner ducts

* Keeping your blinds closed when the sun is shining in

* Using a programmable thermostat

By making a few of these changes, you won?t cringe when you open those utility bills, and you might even be able to reap benefits beyond the summer.

?If homes are not properly insulated or sealed, cool air is leaking out and homeowners are throwing money out of the window,? says Harrison. ?By making a few energy-efficient changes to your home, you can help keep electric bills in check and even increase the value of your home.?

$3 billion Comcast sale of A&E to Disney, Hearst OK'd by feds

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Federal antitrust authorities have officially cleared Comcast's sale of its shares of the A&E network to the Walt Disney Company and the Hearst Corporation, the Federal Trade Commission has announced.

The $3.03 billion deal will involve cash and a note issued by A&E. Disney and Hearst will each control half of the company, which Comcast picked up as part of its 2011 purchase of a controlling interest in NBC Universal.

It had a 15.8 percent share in the cable channel.

With the sale of Comcast's stake, A&E now has a valuation of $20 billion, a clear indication of the high premium that investors put on cable channels with their strong advertising and retransmission revenues.

As a minority shareholder, Comcast had the option to sell its stake in the company, which was created after the 2009 merger of A&E and Lifetime, which Comcast also owns.

In return for selling A&E, Comcast gets cash that it can use to bolster NBC's flagging primetime line-up or acquire a larger interest in NBC Universal. Comcast hopes it can buy out General Electric's stake in the entertainment company by 2014.

In the past, only the financial giants and big multinational companies were allowed to trade currency. Now the technology innovations have made currency trading easy for all. You just need to be online and may start to trade currency.

Forex is the name given to this currency trade market in which powerful currencies of the selected developed countries are exchanged. These currencies include USD, GBP, EURO and a few others. You need not to stock any of these currencies for currency business.

The currency trade depends on the credit agreements. All the transactions in the trading market are regulated by the words of honor. All traders in the market honestly abide by these words of honor.

You should be well versed with the usual terms of this market before you start online currency trading. Sometimes you may face loss on your capital investment in this currency market due to lack of enough knowledge.

There are always ups and downs in the currency trade market. This fluctuation in the forex market is the basis of profits and is motivated by several factors. You will sell a currency with a lower rate of interest. This fund is to be used for buying another currency with higher interest rates. This difference in the rates of the interest fetches you the profits for which you are in the currency trading market.

The monetary value of a certain currency depends on its supply and demand. The foreigners visiting to your country will need the currencies of your country to buy goods and for other expenses.

Similarly the local residents of your country planning foreign tours will require the currencies of their destination countries. So the values of currencies fluctuate with the invasion of the foreign currencies in a certain country.

The market position of a currency is also responsible for the fluctuations in the currency?s value. People buy and sell the certain currencies based on the speculation in the currency trading market.

The market value of a certain currency also indicates about the health of economy of the country to which that currency belongs. The high value of the currency is an indication of sound economy of belonging country.

LONDON, Ohio (AP) -- London, England is not the only city of that name gaining international attention these days as it hosts the Summer Olympics.

The Columbus Dispatch (http://bit.ly/MLmIIN) reports that Ohio's London is being seen around the world in an athletic company's latest advertising campaign. Nike timed its campaign to coincide with the Olympic Games running through Aug. 12 in London, England.

The Ohio city's water tower, bearing its name, dominates the opening scene of Nike's ad campaign gone viral. It debuted this week and has collected more than 3 million views on YouTube.

The minute-long video includes footage of other sites in the central Ohio city. It also shows scenes from other towns named London.

The ad showcases everyday athletes with the message that anyone can set goals and achieve great things.

Man shoots his two kids, one fatally, kills himself

WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) ? A man who had recently separated from his wife shot his two children, killing his 7-year-old daughter, before committing suicide, prosecutors said.

A family member called police Saturday night after finding the bodies of 41-year-old Daryl Benway and his daughter, Abigail, in the master bedroom of their two-story Oxford home, Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. said.

Benway's 9-year-old son, Owen, was found shot in the head in the kitchen and was taken to UMass Memorial Children's Medical Center in serious condition. Owen has been in pediatric intensive care, a spokesman for Early said Sunday. He said he had no additional information about Owen Benway's condition, and a hospital spokeswoman would not comment.

Benway's wife, Kelleen, returned home after the shootings, unaware of what had happened, and found a swarm of police cruisers and television crews, Early said. She was taken to the children's hospital, where authorities told her the fates of her children and husband.

Neighbors told the Telegram & Gazette that Daryl Benway's brother Shawn lived on the first floor of the home with his wife and mother. Shawn Benway called 911 to report the shootings, Early said.

Early said he couldn't speculate on a motive. He said the Benways separated weeks ago but were still married.

No restraining orders had been filed against Daryl Benway, and he had no criminal record, the DA said. He had a gun license that expired in 1999, Early said.

On Daryl Benway's Facebook page, his profile picture posted in December showed him with his family in front of a Christmas tree. He described the woman next to him as "my Beautiful wife Kelleen." Owen stood in front of him in a white dress shirt and red plaid tie, while brown-haired Abigail wore a black and white dress with a black hair bow.

Daryl Benway listed his place of employment as TJX Cos., which operates discount retailers TJ Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods, as well as Ross Stores Inc.

The Olympic Parade Of Nations: A Stroll Around The World

As a sports fanatic and traveler who's always been fascinated by the intersection of nationalism and sport, I never miss the Parade of Nations during the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games. It's a little like a quick stroll around the world in that you get a look at athletes from 204 countries around the globe.

You can tell a lot about a country based on how their athletes dress and the way they carry themselves. It's also a gas to listen to the broadcasters as they try to find something interesting to say about each country and their contingent. In case you missed the parade last night, here are some of the highlights and lowlights.

Borat Makes a Cameo- As the athletes from Kazakhstan made their way into the arena, I had a premonition that Bob Costas and Matt Lauer were going to say something about Borat and sure enough, they did, making reference to the fact that Borat's version of the Kazakh anthem was played for a Kazakh athlete who won a gold medal at a shooting competition in Kuwait in March.

Andorra's Old Geezer- Costas took comfort in noting that Joan Tom?s Roca, a 61-year-old sports shooter who served as Andorra's flag bearer is a year older than he is. But I don't think Roca's had nearly as much work done.

Coolest Hats- Congratulations to the Olympic contingent from Lesotho, which clearly had the best hats of the evening. Their conical, pointy bamboo hats made them look a bit like Vietnamese rice farmers.

Most Ridiculous Hats: The group from Belize was wearing the kind of hats you'd see on a carnival barker. Why?

Ignominious Distinction: As the athletes from poor Bangladesh entered the stadium, Costas informed American viewers that Bangladesh is the largest country never to win an Olympic medal as their athletes snapped photos and waved to the crowd. Woo-hoo! Now there's something to shout about.

Most Colorful Robes- When the Cameroonian athletes were introduced, I nearly had to adjust my television set. They wore blinding, black and red robes with almost every color of the rainbow thrown in somewhere. An "A" for effort.

You Wore What? They were only on my screen for a matter of seconds, but I swear the Chilean contingent looked like extras from Zorro the Gay Blade.

Inane Commentary Part 1- Croatia's flag bearer was a handball goalkeeper, prompting Matt Lauer to make one of the evening's dumbest remarks.

"Handball ? this is a sport that doesn't have a great foothold in the U.S., but if you're looking to get an Olympic medal, this would be a good sport to take up," he said, seemingly at least half serious.

Right, the sport isn't popular here, so go ahead and take it up, you'll be sure to get an Olympic medal in it.

Um, We Have Nothing Whatsoever to Say About These Countries- Costas and Lauer had something to say about almost every country but in a few cases they just said the name of the country and nothing else. Surely, the Republic of Congo, Cote D'Ivoire and the other snubbed countries are seething this morning.

Smile!- I wasn't surprised that the athletes from North Korea weren't smiling, (you'd be grimacing if you lived there too) but why did the flag bearers from Cape Verde and Armenia look like they were ready to kill someone? I guess they had their game faces on.

A Dig on Badminton and the Danes- Costas introduced the Danish team by mentioning that they were the best non-Asian nation at Badminton. Hmmmm. That probably ranks right up there with being the best at table tennis, excluding the Chinese. And after that ignominious distinction, Costas couldn't resist a dig at the sport writ large.

"And if you're looking for badminton coverage, and who isn't, you can find it on nbcolympics.com," he said.

Nice Boots!- The Czech team was decked out in some snazzy bright blue rubber rain boots, in a nice dig at the notoriously crap English weather.

Please Drug Test the Independent Olympic Athletes Contingent- There were four "stateless" athletes who came out under the Independent Olympic Athletes grouping and they all clearly looked like they were on something. A blonde from The Netherlands Antilles was jumping around more than an extra in a House of Pain video.

Did George Washington Sire Any Children in Palau?- If anyone can explain to me why Palau's flag bearer was wearing what appeared to be a colonial-era wig, please let me know in the comments section.

Give That Man a Meal- Mike Tebulo, a marathon runner who served as Malawi's flag bearer looked like he weighs about 100 pounds. (And according to his bio, he's actually 119 lbs!)

Coolest Headcovering- Zamzam Mohamed Farah, a track athlete who was Somalia's flag bearer, wore a power blue head-covering with a big star on her forehead. Without knowing what the cultural significance of this outfit is, I can only say that I thought it was the most badass costume of the night.

Giving Nauru a Break- Lauer mentioned that Nauru had the smallest Olympic delegation but failed to mention that it's the fattest country in the world.

Ugliest Shirts- OK, Togo, I'm talking to you here. What was up with the garish, gold floral patterned shirts?

Shiny, Happy Spaniards- As I said from the outset, you can tell a lot about a country based upon how its athletes carry themselves and the Spaniards looked like they'd just come from a bar, befitting their nation's late night party ethos.

Cheer Up Eritrea- So perhaps the Eritrean team has no chance at winning any medals, but why were they so dour looking? Was it the fact that they were kitted out in somber looking gray suits? Or did someone replace their coffee with Folgers crystals?

TEAM USA: Not Tough Enough- I was not a fan of Team USA's Ralph Lauren metrosexual made-in-China outfits with the big polo player logos and cheesy berets. We want to intimidate people, don't we? I think we could have taken a lesson from American Samoa, which had a few Rambo-esque shirtless dudes in tribal garb leading their contingent. Now he looked tough.

(AP) ? A boy is recovering after he was hit in the face by a bird while riding a roller coaster at an amusement park in New Jersey.

The collision occurred as the Kingda Ka coaster at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson was returning to the station Thursday.

Park spokeswoman Kristen Siebeneicher tells the Asbury Park Press (http://on.app.com/N1hV0G ) the boy was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries to his face and neck. She says it's unclear what type of bird it was, but characterized it as small, and says its carcass is being handed over to the Ocean County Health Department.

The 45-story Kingda Ka coaster, which reaches speeds up to 128 mph, was shut down for 30 minutes.

Romney seeks lift in Israel after London miscues

By Garrett Haake, NBC News

?

LONDON -- Mitt Romney will try to rebuild momentum for his closely watched foreign trip Saturday when he arrives in Israel, where the presumptive GOP nominee will look to escape two days' worth of negative headlines plaguing his campaign in London.

Romney will arrive in Jerusalem with hopes of finding surer political footing than in London. He spent most of his two days in the United Kingdom's capital trying to clean up a controversy spurred by his comments to NBC doubting London's preparation for the Summer Olympic Games. He and his wife Ann attended the opening ceremonies last night.

This will be Romney's fourth visit to Israel, and it's expected to be another whirlwind day of meetings with top officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (a friend of Romney's from their days at Boston Consulting Group decades ago), and Palestinian leader Salam Fayyad, whom Romney also knows from previous visits.

Romney will also give a public speech while in Jerusalem ??his first such engagement thus far during his foreign trip ??that is expected to be heavy on praise for America's most important ally in the Middle East, with whom Romney has repeatedly called for the U.S. to "lock arms" on the international stage.

The presumptive GOP nominee has pledged to keep with diplomatic tradition by not criticizing President Obama or his foreign policy while on foreign soil, but in an interview with the Israeli newspaper Hayom (owned by conservative mega-donor Sheldon Adelson), Romney ripped the president for various elements of his policy toward Israel, including the president's call for the Israel to consider returning to its pre-1967 borders, including land swaps with the Palestinians to compensate for disputed territory.

"The president has also spoken of returning to 1967 borders ? they are indefensible. And acting as a negotiator and usurping the primary role played by Israel in negotiating for its own future is not the right course for America to take," Romney told the paper.

Romney also indicated in his interview with Hayom that his primary audience on this trip to Israel was, after all, American voters. In 2008, President Obama carried the Jewish vote with 78 percent of the vote, a lead into which Romney's campaign would love to make inroads.

Former U.S. Ambassador to Israel Martin Indyk explains:

"The context is a political campaign in which there is a sense that because of tensions between Obama and Benjamin Netanyahu the American Jewish vote is up for grabs," said Indyk, who served under Bill Clinton. "In that context its natural that the Republican campaign would seek to emphasize the friendships Romney has in Israel and the problems Obama has had with Netanyahu."

Indyk, who has authored a book on Obama's foreign policy, described Obama's security record on Israel - enhanced Friday by the signing of a new agreement - "impeccable," but said Romney had room to appeal to Israelis and Americans by showing more warmth to Israel than the sometimes cold Obama.

Sure to be on the agenda in Romney's various meetings: the specter of a nuclear Iran, the most pressing security issue to Israel.

"Again, he's got to walk between the raindrops, because while he'll try to draw distinction and claim Obama is weak and he is strong on this issue, he's got to be careful not to give the American voting public the impression if he's president he'll go to war with Iran," Indyk said. ?

Trulia, A Real Estate Listing Company, Has ... - Business Insider

Robert Libetti/ Business Insider

Another Silicon Valley startup is getting ready to go public. Trulia, a real estate listing company based in San Francisco, has filed for an IPO, Reuters' sources say.

JPMorgan Chase and Deutsche Bank are reportedly behind it, but neither the company nor the banks have confirmed the news.

Trulia shows homebuyers and sellers what properties are worth; it also provides information about neighborhoods, school systems, crime rates and more. It was founded in 2004 by Pete Flint and has raised $32.8 million from Sarofim Fayez and Co, Kevin Hartz, Accel Partners, Thorner Ventures and Sequoia Capital.

Since its revenues are below $1 billion, it's able to file for an IPO confidentially under the JOBS Act without revealing all of its financial information. The S-1 needs to be made public at least 21 days prior to the road show, however. LegalZoom and Workday also filed to go public this way.

Short Sales vs. Foreclosures: the Children | Marshfield Real Estate

Posted: 27 Jul 2012, KCM Blog

This week, we have looked at the advantages of a short sale over a foreclosure from five different perspectives: Sellers?, Neighborhoods?, Banks?, Prices and the Children. ? The KCM Crew

We were recently troubled by the findings of a research paper authored by Julia Isaacs of the Brookings Institute for the organization First Focus which was titled The Ongoing Impact of Foreclosures on Children. In the report, Ms. Isaacs quantified the number of children that have been impacted: 2.3 million children have already lost their homes to foreclosure 3 million additional children are at risk of losing their home

She also noted the four ways foreclosures may affect children negatively: Families receiving foreclosure notices are much more likely to move than other families. Children who move frequently do less well in school. Homeowners receiving a foreclosure notice are under a lot of financial and psychological stress. Parents under financial distress sometimes engage in harsher and less supportive parenting.? This can lead to negative behaviors on the part of children, making it harder for them to interact well with peers and in school. Foreclosures have a negative impact on physical as well as mental health, with studies finding higher rates of non-elective visits to emergency rooms and hospitals in ZIP codes with the highest foreclosure rates. Children living in or near foreclosed homes may suffer the consequences of living in neighborhoods with more vacant houses, higher crime rates, lower social cohesion, and a lower tax base.

The Official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics just published a report on the impact of the housing crises on child abuse. Their conclusion:

?Multicenter hospital data show an increase in pediatric admissions for physical abuse and high-risk traumatic brain injuries (TBI) during a time of declining all-cause injury rate. Abuse and high-risk TBI admission rates increased in relationship to local mortgage delinquency and foreclosure trends.?

If you find that one of your clients is at risk of foreclosure, explain their options. The new National Mortgage Settlement might give them a pathway to stay in their home.

You can get information on the opportunities the settlement offers here.

However, if they have exhausted all their options and now must decide between a short sale and foreclosure, help them analyze what is the best decision for themselves and their families.

In most cases, a short sale will be the better option for them and their children as they will be able to have some control over the moving date and the move itself. This will create a level of dignity in the move that will alleviate some of the pressure on the parents and as a result lead to more effective parenting.

Does energy efficiency raise house values? ? Energy in Demand ...

Frequently analysts are asked to know if there is a premium on energy-efficient homes since the change in asset value has an effect on undertaking a retrofit investment or the purchase of a high performing new building.? This study, reported in the Washington Post by Kenneth Harney, gives some strong evidence that there is a positive effect.

It has been a controversial question in the home real estate market for years: Is there extra green when you buy green? Do houses with lots of energy-saving and sustainability features sell for more than houses without them? If so, by how much?

Some studies have shown that consumers? willingness to pay more for Energy Star and other green-rated homes tends to diminish during tough economic times. Others have found that green-certified houses sell for at least a modest premium over similar but less-efficient homes.

But now a new study involving an unusually large sample of 1.6 million homes sold in California between 2007 and early 2012 has documented that, holding all other variables constant, a green certification label on a house adds an average of 9 percent to its selling value. Researchers also found something they dubbed the ?Prius effect?: Buyers in areas where consumer sentiment in support of conservation is relatively high ? as measured by the percentage of hybrid-auto registrations in local Zip codes ? are more willing to pay premiums for green-certified houses than buyers in areas where hybrid registrations are lower.

The study found no significant correlations between local utility rates ? the varying charges per kilowatt-hour of electricity in different areas ? and consumers? willingness to pay premium prices for green-labeled homes. But it did find that in warmer parts of California, especially in the Central Valley, buyers are willing to pay more for the cost savings on energy that come with a green-rated property.

The research was conducted by Matthew E. Kahn, an economics professor at UCLA, and Nils Kok of Maastricht University in the Netherlands, currently a visiting scholar at the University of California at Berkeley. From their study?s 1.6 million home transactions, Kahn and Kok identified 4,321 dwellings that sold with Energy Star, LEED or GreenPoint Rated labels. They then ran analyses to determine how much green labeling contributed to the selling price, eliminating all other factors contained in the real estate records: locational effects, school districts, crime rates, time period of sale, views and amenities such as swimming pools.

Energy Star is a rating system jointly sponsored by the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency that is widely used in new home construction. It rewards designs that sharply reduce operational costs in heating, cooling and water use, and that improve indoor air quality. The LEED certification, created by the private nonprofit U.S. Green Building Council, focuses on what it calls ?sustainable building and development practices.? Though more commonly seen in commercial development, it is also available as a rating for single-family homes. The GreenPoint Rated designation, created by a nonprofit group called Build It Green, is similar to LEED and can be used on newly constructed as well as existing homes.

The 9 percent average price premium for green-rated homes is roughly in line with studies conducted in Europe, where energy-efficiency labeling on news and resale houses is far more commonplace. Houses rated ?A? under the European Union?s system commanded a 10 percent average premium in one study, while dwellings with poor ratings sold at discount.

Labeling in the United States is a politically sensitive real estate issue. The National Association of Realtors has lobbied Congress and federal agencies to thwart adoption of any form of mandatory labeling of existing houses, arguing that an abrupt move to adopt such a system could have severely negative effects. A loss of value at resale because of labeling would be disastrous, the association has argued, particularly coming out of a housing downturn in which owners across the country have lost trillions of dollars of equity since 2006.

The National Association of Home Builders, on the other hand, has enthusiastically embraced labeling as a selling advantage for new houses. Buyers of such homes today are far more likely than purchasers of resale homes to find them rated as energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.

But there can be an environmental downside to new homes as well: Many are located in subdivisions on the periphery of metropolitan areas, leading to higher fuel expenditures ? and more air pollution ? because homeowners have longer commutes to work. Kahn and Kok make no secret about where they stand on labeling: More disclosure on the green characteristics of homes makes sense ? and a lot of savings on energy consumption ? for buyers and sellers.

How badly do you want an all new, all better Facebook for iPhone app? Well...

Facebook once again rumored to be working on all new, all better iPhone app... and a Facebook phone.

Facebook's iPhone app getting a complete, natively-coded, totally re-designed update is once again in the news today, though this time with the names of some former Apple talent behind it. Bloomberg says the people involved in the update include:

Greg Novick, who helped develop the touch-screen user interface; Tim Omernick and Chris Tremblay, who also worked on the device?s software; and Scott Goodson, who helped create the stock-market application, according to people with knowledge of the hires.

Last year, Facebook also bought Push Pop Press, a digital publishing software maker co-founded by Apple alumni Mike Matas and Kimon Tsinteris, two designers who helped build the look and feel of the iPhone and iPad software. Matas is credited with creating the battery logo that shows on the iPhone screen when it?s charging. A longtime BlackBerry user, Mark Zuckerberg converted to an iPhone in the past couple of years.

An intermediate release is said to be coming in a few months, with a bigger redesign in the wings for 2013. Which is good, because while Facebook for iPhone is one of the most popular apps in the history of the platform, it's also been one consistently buggy and, frankly, not a great experience. Getting some former Apple talent behind it is a good thing. These folks have shown they know how to make great looking, great working apps.

Facebook, like Google, gets the web but they don't get mobile. Indie developers continue to code circles around these big companies, but finally the big companies have gotten smart enough to simply buy up the great indie developers. It's why Facebook bought and hired the developers mentioned above, it's why they bought Instagram, and it's why they're almost certainly not done yet.

Mobile is the future. Facebook knows it. Let's hope the next version of Facebook for iPhone shows it.

Oh, and Bloomberg repeats the rumor of Facebook teaming up with HTC to make a Facebook phone with deep social integration. Wasn't a surprise when it was first rumored years ago, isn't a surprise now. If you don't own a platform, you're at the mercy of those who do. It's why Google bought Android back in the Windows Mobile days, and why every company with pockets deep enough to try is working on a phone now.

Only question is, how many can the market support, and which ones will they rally behind? Apple and Google? Facebook and Amazon? Microsoft and BlackBerry?

How OUYA Created a Trending Brand in Less than a Day ...

Hold on one minute ? what is, who is OUYA?

OUYA is ?A New Kind of Video Game Console? ? this is an example of disruption at its finest.

From an unknown name a few weeks ago, OUYA has written the blueprint for what can only be referred to as ?viral community branding?. If you do not recognize the name, you?re not alone ? OUYA has just had the most successful launch in Kickstarter history by raising over a million dollars in less than 8 hours! Since the fundraising program was unveiled and launched they?ve been trending worldwide on Twitter, has been one of the most searched terms on Google and Bing and the subject of countless articles.

What they accomplished in less than 24 hours is phenomenal. They have now raised more than 5 million dollars in just a few short days.

So what?s the secret behind such a quick marketing success? There are a lot of factors to consider but all of them have one thing in common: it?s all about Community.

Harnessing the power of Community has been done before but rarely with such successful execution. There are a lot of steps that have been taken to make sure the brand would be successful. When dissecting the brand identity of OUYA it?s clear that their marketing message is crafted to cater to their audience: gamers. The product is indeed filling a void in the gaming industry, yet what made the branding so efficient is the way OUYA positioned itself as a console for gamers that couldn?t exist without their support.

The people behind OUYA are all ?rock-star? veterans of the gaming industry. Julie Uhrman is a former digital distribution VP for IGN (a Newscorp owned company). Ed Fries is one of the fathers of the original Microsoft Xbox. Muffi Chadali is responsible for the Amazon Kindle. And designer extraordinaire Yves Behar is considered to be the heir apparent to Philippe Stark.

By using an effective marketing message and harnessing the right channels to talk to their audience, OUYA?s strategy and message was strong from the outset. They also connected with legendary game designers who had recently experienced overwhelmingly successful Kickstarter campaigns. This gave their product ?street? credibility by using expressions like ?open source?, ?hackable,? and ?free to play? which implies positive connotations within the gaming community. This turned community influencers into an active component of development. Crowd funding completed the equation.

What can?t be overlooked is the low entry price point of the device. This is a tremendous advantage, but to achieve the exposure OUYA needed and ultimately received it was imperative to appeal to the consumers and the most vocal influencers in the gaming community. The result was like an out-of-control wildfire that spread quickly.

These are smart and experienced people and this was a well thought out plan that likely produced results better than originally anticipated. It should be noted that this technique of branding is not normally utilized to be self-sustainable. It would be naive to think that the all-star industry veteran team behind OUYA is solely relying on the community for developing its offering.

OUYA was most likely just gauging consumer/developer interest, and had Angel or VC Investors waiting to see how well the Kickstarter campaign did before buying in with a more substantial and ultimately dilutive amount. A good influencer/community based campaign can make a brand and therefore the difference between the terms of the deal, or whether it goes through at all.

There?s no guarantee that OUYA will be a success but they?ve completed a critical phase quickly and established their brand and created a huge buzz in a very specific community. That alone is a powerful marketing tool, and the goals and lessons learned from this phase were clearly accomplished. By knowing their audience, they were able to cater to it directly, engage community influencers, listen to their needs and turn potential consumers into community advocates by giving them a crucial role in the product lifecycle.

Quite simply ? ?The people have spoken. And they want their Ouya?. ? Venture Beat
