Methodological pluralism ? media/anthropology

by Geoff Payne via The SAGE Dictionary of Social Research Methods (2006)

Print pages: 174-176

Definition

An approach that advocates flexibility in the selection of social research methods, based on the principle of choosing the most suitable methods for the nature of the problem being researched. More generally, methodological pluralism calls on the researcher to be tolerant of other people?s preferred methods even when they differ from one?s own.

Distinctive Features

From time to time, disagreements among social scientists about which are the ?best? social research methods become more vocal and indeed, confrontational. An example of this is the competition between older, ethnographic research styles associated with sociologists at the University of Chicago, and the (then newer) work based on social surveys being promoted by Harvard and Columbia after World War II. In the UK a conflict between quantitative methods and several newer forms of qualitative research took place during the 1970s. These disputes are usually marked by antagonistic criticisms of published work, lengthy expositions in defence of particular methods, and even personal abuse.

Methodological pluralism, promoted by Bell and Newby (1977), rejected the idea that one type of methods was automatically better than another. They argued that it was healthy for sociology to contain a number of different theoretical perspectives, and that while each perspective tended to imply a given method of research, each new research project should be tackled on the basis of its own particular features. The research methods selected for the project should be the ones that best fitted the characteristics of the phenomena being studied.

For example, studies of the national rates at which something was occurring, or projects dealing with simpler concepts that could be relatively easily measured, were better suited to social surveys, pre-coded questionnaires and other quantitative methods. On the other hand, when more detail was required, or phenomena were complex, subtle, or unclear, this was more suited to research by observation, less structured interviews, ethnographic description and other qualitative styles. Not every researcher would use every style of research during their careers, nor should they be proficient in all research methods. The plurality would be achieved in the total research output of the discipline as a whole (Bell and Roberts, 1984).

Evaluation

Despite the common sense of methodological pluralism, more sociologists pay lip-service to it than actively adopt it as a philosophy. The main reason is that during their education and early careers, each researcher acquires a set of personal preferences for one type of social science over others. This is not just a question of technical skills, but rather an interest in certain topics and a philosophical view of the social world and how it can be analysed.

There are genuine differences between schools of research, from those seeking to involve and empower the people being researched, through to those that regard ?respondents? merely as sources of information, and from those that see the social world as intricately interconnected and difficult to ?know?, to those that concentrate on the generality of patterned associations between small sets of ?variables?. While not always consciously returning to the complex social theories that underlie their positions, researchers read mainly a sub-set of the literature written by like-minded colleagues, defining research problems in specific ways, and therefore carry out their research using a narrow repertoire of methods.

In some cases, this results only in a rather focused approach, without much concern for other approaches. In others, the intellectual context of the research is strongly associated with a particular method: the context defines what is worth researching, how it should be researched and what order of interpretations can be made. In its more extreme form this results in ritualized denunciation of alternatives often becoming a part of publication. Where some researchers adhere to a ?standpoint? position, their intention is an explicitly ideological one which goes beyond just making new discoveries, to the promotion of the interests of one particular group. Challenging other researchers? methods is one way of undermining the position of rival interest groups (Payne and Payne, 2004: 89-93, 152-7).

Such out-of-hand dismissal because of the type of methods a study has used is a different matter from legitimately debating the competency of its research basis, when that is part of a general evaluation. However, it would be wrong to portray academic life as consisting solely of calm, rational, philosophical debate. Academics also compete for resources (research funding, access to journals, tenured posts, career promotion) in just as determined a way as do people in other walks of life. Attacking the type of research methods used by rivals is one weapon in the struggle between individuals, and institutions, for supremacy.

Not surprisingly, methodological pluralism?s failure to recognize these processes has meant that its call for toleration has largely gone unheeded. For example, in the UK the sociology that has been published in recent years has depended heavily on a narrow range of qualitative methods. A recent study of journal papers found only a minority using quantitative methods: only 2.6 per cent ?involved bivariate analysis and were written by sociologists at British universities, and only 8 (3.5%) involved multivariate techniques ? This can hardly be described as methodological pluralism? (Payne et al., 2004: 160).

Family Weathers Hurricane While Tree Lies on House - Annapolis ...

Mike Berry was in his basement at 4 p.m. on Monday when he heard a loud thud.

"Usually it's my boys jumping off their bunk beds or swan diving off the stairs," Berry said.

Then, he heard a cracking noise.

A large oak tree in his front lawn had crashed onto the roof of his home in the 1400 block of Catlyn Place in the Heritage community.?

"My first thought was check to make sure it didn't come through my house or hurt my kids," Berry said.

He was in luck?the tree branches didn't break the window in his guest bedroom or pierce through its ceiling.

The power even stayed on.

"That's the most amazing thing," Berry said. "We lose power every storm?usually within the first hour."

Berry, his wife and their four children slept downstairs in their split-level home, and the couple listened for any sounds that the tree was shifting or sliding throughout the night.?

Hurricane Sandy took down several large trees in Annapolis and knocked out the power for about one quarter of Anne Arundel County on Monday night. Annapolis recorded winds of up to 69 mph, and City Dock flooded up to Memorial Circle. In Pasadena, a 73-year-old man died when a tree crashed through his house.

Berry said he felt lucky that his tree only gave his house "a glancing blow."

By Tuesday morning, Berry had hired a tree company and was told the tree would be gone by the afternoon. Aside from the "insurance nightmare," Berry said he feels like his family survived Hurricane Sandy with minimal impact.

"Would you rather have a tree laying on your house or no power?" Berry asked. "I think we'll take the tree."

Legacy Applications a Threat to Windows 8 Security

Windows 8 finally made it to prime time last week. This version of Microsoft's operating system makes significant improvements in its security stance, said Alex Balan, a senior product manager at Bitdefender, but some of them are likely to be undermined by users wedded to old programs. The way the Windows 8 user interface handles applications is a significant security improvement.

Inside the Enemy

Inside The Enemy
We are need desperate need of characters! Please come and join!

Dear Agents,
Your mission is simple. I am sending you into the enemies HQ as rookies. You are to work your way up in ranks until you are amongst
Harley?s favourites this mission could take years but it is vital for the British intelligence.

Once you are inside the base keep a low profile as much as possible until I say something into the ear piece planted in your brains. I can?t lie to you all this is the most dangerous mission I have ever organized but I have faith in you all to come out on top of this.

Make sure once you are in you remember to-

The rest of the note was sabotaged and ruined beyond use the agents weren?t even fully qualified yet and they were trapped in the enemy. The five agents are meant to be climbing ranks in the terrorist group as quickly as possible but without the rest of the letter they are clueless all they know is to act loyal and gain trust and respect. They never got information from the British Intelligence through the brain chips so they reprogrammed them to communicate with the other four agents in Arizona. The agents are brave but unfortunate because only two weeks into their mission suspicions are rising on the youngest agent who a mere fourteen year old is claiming to be working with her sister. Harley brought it but this mission is so damn risky now even the most confident agents are uncertain of their chances and safety...

Joseph Harley is committed almost every crime out there murder, rape, theft, fraud, drug dealing , vandalism and terrorism. He is a cruel man however he tends to form close relationships to his loyal men and when he is falling for The Stunner?s convincing acting he forms a relationship with her. He know thinks they are in love and that the Player is his most loyal worker but he is wrong The Stunner is playing her little games again. Harley however hates the other rookies. He makes an exception for The Little One because of her relation to The Stunner but he despises her secretly. The other two agents are going through hell to keep their selves covered and look loyal. Joseph Harley has started telling The Stunner everything and everything he tells her she tells them.

New York City hospital evacuates patients and other health news ...

In a scramble that will be familiar to Louisiana medical professionals, one of New York City's hospitals evacuated patients last night after back-up power failed, the New York Times reported. NYU Langone Medical Center, located in lower Manhattan, started moving patients on Monday evening after emergency systems didn't start following power outages caused by Hurricane Sandy.

The newspaper reported that all 215 patients were taken to other hospitals in the city.

Bloomberg News reported that one of the hospital's trustees said the generators were old and in a bad location. The Guardian newspaper reported that the hospital had eight generators, including one on a higher floor. The patients who were moved included critically-ill infants, the paper noted.

Struggles with back-up systems at hospitals and nursing homes has been a consistent problem?in Louisiana following hurricanes. These problems rose to a crisis level following Hurricane Katrina, when patients were trapped in flooded hospitals for days until they could be evacuated.

Some families of patients who died while waiting rescue from the hot, powerless facilities said hospitals should have evacuated their relatives before the storm. In March 2011, Tenet Healthcare Corp., which had run Memorial Medical Center, settled a class-action lawsuit that accused the company of failing to adequately prepare.

But hospital and nursing home administrators have also struggled during more recent storms. Thousands of patients from the New Orleans area were evacuated to Baton Rouge in advance of Hurricane Gustav in 2008, only to end up in facilities without sufficient back-up power, which meant they lacked air conditioning. Some hospitals in the capital city ended up transporting patients back to New Orleans, which fared better during that storm.

Following the storm, ProPublica's Sheri Fink reported about the tradeoffs state officials had to consider when deciding to evacuate frail patients, who sometimes can't handle the move.?After Gustav, then-health secretary Alan Levine said he believed the state made the right decision to transport?patients out of the New Orleans area.

Most recently after Hurricane Isaac, Mayor Mitch Landrieu criticized private hospitals and nursing homes, saying they need to focus on having back-up power sources for disasters.

. . . . .

In other health care news this week, The?New York Times on Monday reported that the Obama?administration is finalizing rules that will put in place two nationwide health insurance plans available?throughout the country. The health insurance plans, which will contract with the federal government, are part of Obama's health care law. They were meant to increase competition in state insurance markets.

Some insurance commissioners are skeptical, saying these "multistate plans" need to be subject to the same regulations as other plans in their markets, according to the article.

. . . . .

Kaiser Health News interviewed uninsured patients in Miami and found they are not focusing on health care as they ponder who to vote for next week. Instead, the uninsured people who spoke about their intentions said they were more focused on other issues, such as what the candidates would do for the poor in general, or their positions on Cuban immigration.

Turkish police fire tear gas at secularist march

ANKARA, Turkey - Turkish police fired tear gas and water cannon to disperse thousands of secularists protesting at a banned rally in the capital on Monday against what they see as an increasingly authoritarian and Islamist government.

The scenes of chanting men and women draped in Turkish flags and carrying banners portraying the country's founding father Mustafa Kemal Ataturk highlight a longstanding division in Turkish society between staunch secularists on the one hand and more conservative religious Turks on the other.

Although Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan won a third term in power last year with 50 percent of the vote, many secular Turks fear his socially conservative AK Party has Islamist tendencies that threaten the secular republic founded by Ataturk.

"They are trying to turn us into another Iran or some kind of neo-Ottoman Empire. We are against this," said retired 64-year-old Erdem Sevinc.

"We are here today to send a message to those who are trying to destroy the principles of this republic," he said.

The local government in Ankara, also controlled by Erdogan's AK Party, banned the rally citing "intelligence" it would be used for "provocation", a move protesters said was designed to silence government opponents.

Turkey sentences 322 military officers to jail over 'Sledgehammer' coup plot

"Why have they banned this march? Because they are scared. They are scared of course," said 68-year-old Metin Alkan, sporting a black tie emblazoned with Ataturk's face.

"Look at us, do we look like a danger?" he said, laughing.

Waving Turkish flags several thousand people gathered outside the old parliament building in the city center to try to march to Ataturk's mausoleum to mark the 89th anniversary of the founding of the Turkish Republic in 1923.

"Resign government! Damn you Tayyip!" the crowd chanted, referring to the prime minister.

"The day will come when the AK Party will give account to the people," they shouted.

"We are Mustafa Kemal's soldiers! Turkey is secular and will remain secular!" others shouted.

But the marchers were kept back by a barricade of riot police who began firing tear gas and water cannon into the crowd, which included children and elderly men and women, as some people tried to storm the police blockade.

Tear gas, water cannon
Some in the crowd threw projectiles at the line of police, prompting them to fire more tear gas and water cannon. People pushed and shoved to get out of the line of fire while others were doubled up on the ground, coughing from the gas.

Several young girls were carried out of the crowd unconscious, drenched by the water cannon.

"Why are they doing this? This is really bad. We are citizens of this country, we are not enemies," said 21-year-old computer studies student Melisa Cilli.

"They want another kind of system here, a dictatorship, with Erdogan as the dictator," she said.

Several hours later police removed the barricades allowing the crowds to march to the mausoleum some three kilometers away.

Erdogan was first elected a decade ago with an overwhelming majority and has presided over a period of unprecedented prosperity, winning him admirers among Western nations keen to portray Turkey as a democratic example in a troubled region.

PhotoBlog: Syrian refugees find respite near the Turkish border

But that success story has been undermined by growing criticism of the authoritarian style of his rule.

Hundreds of politicians, academics and journalists are in jail on charges of plotting against the government, while more than 300 army officers were convicted last month of conspiring against Erdogan almost a decade ago, and handed long jail terms.

Media watchdog the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said this month that Turkey had jailed more reporters than Iran, China or Eritrea.

Secular Turks also point to increasing restrictions on alcohol and changes to the education system introduced by the AK Party as a sign the country is becoming more Islamic.

Erdogan has also forged close ties with Islamist governments in Egypt, Tunisia and elsewhere in the Arab world.

Kemal Kilicdaroglu, leader of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) set up by Ataturk in 1924, joined the march and later criticized the police's handling of the event.

"Those people only had Turkish flags in their hands. The state had police, tear gas, water cannon and tanks. Hey, where are you going? Are you going to war? You don't need permission to celebrate the republic," he said.

Global shares fall as growth fears mount, Wall St closes

LONDON (Reuters) - World shares and commodities fell on Monday as a recent run of downbeat corporate reports cast a shadow over the economic growth outlook and markets awaited the impact of a huge U.S. hurricane.

All U.S. stock markets were shut in the first weather-related closure for 27 years, and they may close again on Tuesday as forecasters say the storm could be the largest to hit the mainland in American history.

U.S. stock index futures, which traded as usual, were down around 0.3 to 0.6 percent in line with falls seen across major European markets as renewed uncertainty over Spain and Greece put the euro and peripheral bond markets under pressure. <.n/>

The broader MSCI world equity index <.miwd00000pus> lost 0.25 percent to 327.85 points - on track for its worst monthly performance since May as doubts grow over the effect of the latest round of central bank efforts to boost activity.

Positive surprises, including third quarter U.S. and British growth data and signs of stabilization in China, have failed to persuade investors that the world economy can achieve lasting growth as major global companies have forecast weak revenues.

"Risk aversion is rising in all markets, and investors are increasingly focusing on slow global economic growth," said Eugen Weinberg, head of commodities research at Germany's Commerzbank in Frankfurt.

The FTSE Eurofirst 300 index <.fteu3> of top European shares fell 0.4 percent to 1,092.75 points and the euro zone's blue-chip Euro STOXX 50 index <.stoxx50e> was down 0.8 percent to 2,475.29 points.

EURO ZONE PROBLEMS

In Europe, the common currency slipped against the dollar on rising uncertainty over whether Greece would agree to a deal on austerity and with no sign of when Spain might request aid.

Spain's problems appear to be worsening after retail sales in September were reported to be falling at their fastest pace in at least six years following a rise in sales tax.

In Greece, international lenders are refusing to make any further concessions to the government over new labor laws, stalling a deal to release desperately needed funds from the nation's bailout deal.

"Greece has come back to the radar and along with Spain, it poses a slight negative for the euro," said Jeremy Stretch, head of currency strategy at CIBC World Markets.

The euro was down 0.25 percent at $1.2902, close to Friday's two-week low of $1.2882, with volumes expected to taper off as traders in New York stay at home.

Italian political risks were also rising again after former premier Silvio Berlusconi threatened to bring down the government of Mario Monti.

"Berlusconi's rant perhaps highlights the less than stable nature of Italian politics and reinjects some degree of political risk into (Italian government bonds)," said Richard McGuire, rate strategist at Rabobank.

Italian 10-year government debt yields were up 9 basis points at 5.0 percent, with the bonds underperforming even their Spanish counterparts, where yields were 4.5 basis points higher at 5.66 percent.

German government bonds also hit two-week highs, sending 10-year yields down 5 basis points to 1.48 percent, as the weakness on equity markets added to the demand for less risky assets.

"We've got very reduced liquidity, with the U.S. deemed to be shut for the rest of the day so people are biding their time," one fixed income trader noted.

DOLLAR FIRM

The dollar steadied at 79.65 yen, off a four-month high of 80.38 touched on Friday, before a Bank of Japan monetary policy decision on Tuesday. Markets expect the BOJ to take further easing measures.

If the BOJ does ease, it will be the first time the central bank has acted for two consecutive months since 2003.

In oil markets, all eyes were on Hurricane Sandy, which has forced the closure of several big refineries along the east coast of the United States.

"With refineries cutting runs, we're likely to see a build-up in crude stocks which could be driving bearish prices at the moment," said Michael Creed, an economist at National Australia Bank in Melbourne.

Brent crude oil initially fell $1.04 to $108.51 a barrel on the possible impact of the hurricane, before recovering to be slightly firmer at around $109.93. U.S. crude was down 35 cents at $85.93.

Oil analysts say Sandy is likely to depress U.S. oil consumption as commuting and road transport fall and flights to and from East Coast airports are cancelled.

Commodities were also under pressure from speculation that rising evidence of weak corporate earnings around the world mean demand would slow. London copper fell 1.5 percent to $7,705 a metric ton (1.1023 tons).

What To Look For In A Commercial Painter | Power Tools Reviews

commercial painter

A commercial painter has the professional qualifications to handle jobs on your commercial or industrial properties. Large jobs require equipment and tools that your local house painter does not use often or even occasionally. A professional painting contractor maintains contact with local building departments to have access to the latest code changes regarding commercial structures. You can avoid unnecessary fines when your contractor is in conformance with local regulations.

Find Potential Contractors

Your first important job is to find names of painting contractors who are worthy of your consideration. One way to get recommendations from satisfied customers is to go on Facebook or other social media. If you are a member of any business groups, you can ask other business owners for opinions of the contractors they used for jobs similar to yours. Another option is to ask your commercial insurance agent to refer you to other clients who may have the information that you need.

Verify References

Checking references gives you a chance to ask specific questions about the level of difficulty involved in a contractor?s previous jobs. You need to get an honest opinion about the quality of the work and whether it was worth the price. When you take the time to do some background investigative work, you improve your odds of getting the quality job that you expect.

Discuss Technical Matters

A commercial painter uses equipment that incorporates technological advances to apply paints to many different types of surfaces. Your commercial and industrial properties probably do not have use the same exterior materials that are typical of home construction, and more sophisticated equipment is required for them. For example, you need a contractor who understands the flammable nature of paints that may have exposure to high temperatures in your factories or other commercial locations.

In your discussions with the contractor that you plan to hire, find out what plans are in place for the preparation of the surface that needs painting. More problems occur from poorly prepared surfaces than from any other cause, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). In addition, you need to make sure that your contractor knows how to thin paint with the proper solvents in your particular location. Solvents have different properties that can affect odor and combustibility, both of which may affect your employees? safety.

Commercial painters must have the knowledge to select the right spray gun and nozzle for your job so it can handle the paint and make it adhere properly. Advances in technology provide many variations in the pounds per square inch (PSI) of pressure for the proper application of different consistencies in paint.

Review the Contract

You have the right to know the details of your contractor?s license and insurance information, including the ownership of a liability policy that is valued at a million dollars or more. When you have completed your investigative work, you are ready to read the written contract and sign it if you think it confirms your understanding and expectations.

These tips were brought to you on behalf of TTM Finishes Inc. a provider of premium and cost-effective commercial painting in Toronto and surrounding areas.

The How To's of Commercial Real Estate | Eric Chua : Life, Business ...

Anyone interested in the commercial real estate market could benefit from a collection of useful, informative tips. The article below can assist both the novice and the professional in his or her effort to become knowledgeable about the subject.

Purchasing commercial properties is more time-consuming and complex compared to the purchase of a home. But, you should realize that the nature of such deals is critical to maximizing the profit potential of a prospective property.

In order to make sure that you are in prime position to grab that perfect location, gather multiple business partners who are capable of contributing. Two repayment options for these loans are traditional repayments, in which you repay the loan at a certain interest rate, or a profit-based repayment, in which the lender receives some of the proceeds from the property?s income.

TIP! Have an online presence prior to getting into the market. These days, a website is a must as are accounts on professional networking sites like LinkedIn.

If you want to invest in a piece of commercial real estate, think about the kind of tax breaks and benefits you might receive. Speak to a tax professional to ensure you understand how the depreciation and interest will influence your situation positively. However, sometimes an investor can receive taxed income that is not taken as cash, otherwise known as ?phantom income?. Before investing, become more familiar with this sort of income.

There are a lot of ways to save money on repair costs when it comes to property cleanup. You should keep in mind that people who own a stake in a property have a direct responsibility to cover its costs of cleanup. Cleaning up the property and the surrounding area, and commissioning the safe, legal disposal of any waste can be very expensive. Try getting a report about the environment from one of the environmental assessment agencies. This can cost you a good bit of money, but it will save you in the long run.

If you are considering investing in commercial real estate, make sure you are aware that you could possibly pay very high rates of inflation during the course of the next couple years. Just a few years ago, most contracts protected you from inflation by locking you in at a certain interest rate. However, these days, this is rarely done, which means inflation could hit you where it hurts the most.

TIP! When purchasing commercial real estate, you need to have a tight relationship with private lenders and investors. Because properties may be sold without ever being listed, you increase your chances of becoming part of these opportunities if you have networked with the appropriate people.

Watch for motivated sellers. You must look for these sellers, as they are usually eager to sell a property at below market value. Nothing can happen in real estate until you find the deal, which is usually followed by a motivated seller.

Feng shui might improve your commercial investing profits when used correctly in the interior design of your properties. If you provide a lot of open space in your units and avoid clutter as much as possible, buyers are more likely to be interested in your property.

Retain an attorney who is experienced in commercial real estate law before you purchase your first property. In case you encounter an issue, you will be glad you hired an efficient attorney who will find a solution that corresponds to your best interest.

TIP! Have clear ideas in mind what you want out of a possible property before you buy any commercial piece of real estate. One important thing to have clear up front is whether you are thinking of using it for your personal business or if you, instead, want to lease out the property.

Do a walk-through of each property on your short list. Think about taking a contractor that?s a professional with you while you check out different properties. You can then make an initial offer and begin the bargaining phase. Prior to making any final decision, you should thoroughly go over the counteroffers you have received.

Location is essential to the commercial real estate. Neighborhood is important, even when you are looking at commercial property. Also, consider local growth projections. You need to be sure that in five to ten years later, the area will still be growing.

Research your prospective brokers to see how experienced they are with the commercial market. Make sure they have their own expertise in the area of your curiosity or it could be an endeavor wasted. Then if they meet the criteria you are looking for, you can agree to work with that broker exclusively.

TIP! When you are diving into commercial real estate, you want a broker firm that maintains honesty. A good question to ask potential firms is how most of its money is made.

Be sure to learn how to recognize, and take advantage of a good deal. Real estate pros can recognize a good deal right away. They have their exit strategy already planned out, and therefore, they know when to quit a deal and when to stick it out. They can assess any damage that needs to be repaired, and they are adept at deciding whether the deal will ultimately benefit their bottom line.

Tackling different mediums is advised, such as sending a more monthly set in a real estate newsletter, while keeping smaller, daily posts on your preferred social networking solution. Maintain an online presence, and don?t just disappear when the deal is done.

Be sure to first find the right financing. Getting a commercial loan is quite different than getting a loan for a home. They are actually superior in a number of ways. Commercial loans general require a large down payment; however, most lenders will allow you to take an additional loan out to cover your down payment.

TIP! When you are shopping around for commercial property, try to buy properties that are bigger on average. Often, it is equally expensive to maintain either a small or large property.

Make sure that you?re not asking for an unrealistic price for your property. There are many variables that can greatly impact the true value of your lot.

Establish what you need before searching in commercial real estate. Write down the features of a piece of property that are the most essential to you, such as how many square feet it must be and the number of specific rooms it should have, including conference rooms, offices, and restrooms.

TIP! Always include emergency maintenance on your list of need to know things. Be sure to find out who takes care of maintenance in the building and also who handles emergency repair situations.

Hopefully this article has given you a more confident perspective on how you can better handle your commercial real estate endeavors. This collection of tips can help you better your selling or buying technique in commercial real estate.

Scholastic Snake Oil: Things Aren't OK In This School

Scholastic Snake Oil: Things Aren't OK In This School

Things Aren't OK In This School

All right. ?Now I'm going to sound like a crotchety old lady--which, in fact, some people believe I am. ?

But I have to wonder what kind of a world we're living in, and what kinds of "educational" systems we have, when stories about teachers and administrators changing students' wrong answers on standardized tests doesn't even raise eyebrows anymore. ?Or when nobody expresses surprise, much less outrage, when school superintendents move potentially low-scoring students from one grade or school or another so they can't take the standardized tests. ?(Also see this.) Or when people start to think that education administrators' misappropriation of funds or cozying-up to politicians and business moguls is par for the course.

The things I've mentioned--and discussed in previous posts--may have been going on before No Child Left Behind started to dictate "education" policy. ?But they seem to have become more frequent, and the fraud seems to have grown in intensity and complexity, since NCLB was signed into law.

Even after hearing and reading about such things, I was taken aback when I saw this:

"During the school term 2010-2011, both fall and spring, I did not have a 12th grade English class. This class is a requirement for graduation. Dr. Brian Staples gave me a C both semesters for my 12th grade English class. Dr. Brian Staples suggested a student to take my Algebra class online for me. This was a difficult class for me. The Assistant Principal Ms. Cox called her into her office. I paid her $100 and $150 more after completion. My freshman math grades had been switched previous from two F?s to two C?s by Dr. Staples. ..."

Dr. Brian Staples is the principal of Douglass Mid-High School in Oklahoma City. ?The account comes from Kanda Barnes, who got her diploma from that school last year. ?Hers is not the only account of wrongdoing. ?Other students and teachers said Staples forbade teachers from giving students homework and had--Is anyone surprised?--students' grades changed.

Former Assistant Principal Marcia Muhammad became suspicious when a number of students, whom she suspected were failing, had transcripts in which all of their grades were C's. ?

A science teacher said she gave one of the students in question a D, not a C. ?Then Ms. Muhammad started to ask around, and found out that teacher wasn't the only one whose grades were changed by administrators.

Ms. Muhammad was fired. ?But she wasn't the only one whose life was affected by the scandal. ?Her son, who graduated with honors from the school, went on to college but couldn't hack it. She says the failure was "humiliating" and "hurtful" for him, and even worse for other students. ?"They're coming out of school, they're getting in trouble and then they're in jail," she said. ?"It's a pipeline from the classroom to the cell block."

In other words, NCLB is one way in which the Educational-Financial Complex supports the Prison-Industrial Complex

Fishing for answers off Fukushima

Friday, October 26, 2012

Japan's "triple disaster," as it has become known, began on March 11, 2011, and remains unprecedented in its scope and complexity. To understand the lingering effects and potential public health implications of that chain of events, scientists are turning to a diverse and widespread sentinel in the world's ocean: fish.

Events on March 11 began with a magnitude 9.0 earthquake, the fourth largest ever recorded. The earthquake in turn spawned a massive 40-foot tsunami that inundated the northeast Japanese coast and resulted in an estimated 20,000 missing or dead. Finally, the wave caused catastrophic damage to the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant, resulting in the largest accidental release of radiation to the ocean in history, 80 percent of which ended up in the Northwest Pacific Ocean.

In a Perspectives article appearing in October 26, 2012, issue of the journal Science, WHOI marine chemist Ken Buesseler analyzed data made publicly available by the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) on radiation levels in fish, shellfish and seaweed collected at ports and inland sites in and around Fukushima Prefecture. The picture he draws from the nearly 9,000 samples describes the complex interplay between radionuclides released from Fukushima and the marine environment.

In it, Buesseler shows that the vast majority of fish caught off the northeast coast of Japan remain below limits for seafood consumption, even though the Japanese government tightened those limits in April 2012. Nevertheless, he also finds that the most highly contaminated fish continue to be caught off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture, as could be expected, and that demersal, or bottom-dwelling fish, consistently show the highest level of contamination by a radioactive isotope of cesium from the damaged nuclear power plant. He also points out that levels of contamination in almost all classifications of fish are not declining, although not all types of fish are showing the same levels, and some are not showing any appreciable contamination.

As a result, Buesseler concludes that there may be a continuing source of radionuclides into the ocean, either in the form of low-level leaks from the reactor site itself or contaminated sediment on the seafloor. In addition, the varying levels of contamination across fish types points to complex methods of uptake and release by different species, making the task of regulation and of communicating the reasons behind decision-making to the fish-hungry Japanese public all the more difficult.

"To predict the how patterns of contamination will change over time will take more than just studies of fish," said Buesseler, who led an international research cruise in 2011 to study the spread of radionuclides from Fukushima. "What we really need is a better understanding of the sources and sinks of cesium and other radionuclides that continue to drive what we're seeing in the ocean off Fukushima."

To help achieve this, Buesseler and his colleague Mitsuo Uematsu at the University of Tokyo are organizing a scientific symposium in Tokyo on November 12 and 13 to present the most current findings available about how radionuclides from Fukushima Dai-ichi have affected the ocean, marine life, seafood, policy decisions, and media coverage to date. The event will also include a free public colloquium in Tokyo on November 14 to help spread information about the lessons learned to the broadest possible audience.

Soyuz with astronauts docks with space station

ALMATY, Kazakhstan (AP) ? A Russian Soyuz spacecraft carrying three astronauts and a consignment of fish successfully docked Thursday with the International Space Station after a two-day voyage.

The arrival of NASA astronaut Kevin Ford and Russians Oleg Novitsky and Yevgeny Tarelkin on Thursday brings the crew at the orbiting outpost to six.

Novitsky gently slotted the Soyuz craft into the Russian Poisk research module around 410 kilometers (255 miles) above southern Ukraine around six minutes ahead of the scheduled 1235 GMT (8:35 a.m. EDT) arrival.

The trio blasted off Tuesday from a Russian-leased facility in the southern Kazakhstan town of Baikonur.

Incoming cargo includes 32 guppy-like fish that will be used to test how conditions in space impact on living organisms.

Akihiko Hoshide, an astronaut with Japan's JAXA space agency, spent early Thursday morning preparing an aquarium on the Japanese experiment module called "Kibo," or Hope.

"The importance of these very small fishes is that they have bones and muscles just like human beings," Hoshide told NASA TV earlier this year before the start of his mission. "What we're trying to do is have them stay in space for a longer duration and then bring them down to look at their bone structure and muscles."

The hardy Medaka fish, which can grow up to four centimeters (1.6 inches), are considered particularly suitable for the study as they have transparent bodies that enable scrutiny of their internal organs.

A spacewalk by Hoshide and U.S. astronaut Suni Williams to repair an ammonia leak from the station's temperature control system is planned for next Thursday.

NASA says ammonia is pumped through the station's system to keep electronics and other equipment cool.

Another task in the frenetic workload over the incoming crew's first week in orbit will be the unberthing Sunday of a commercial Dragon cargo vehicle.

The capsule loaded with completed scientific experiments will splash down in the afternoon in the Pacific Ocean off the west coast of Baja California.

The growing capabilities of private space vehicle companies have boosted hopes that NASA will be able to focus increasingly on more ambitious exploration projects.

Earlier this month, California-based SpaceX successfully delivered supplies to the space station on Dragon, the first official shipment under a $1.6 billion contract with NASA. It calls for 12 such shipments.

Cygnus, the first cargo vehicle to the station from Orbital Sciences Corp., of Dulles, Virginia, is scheduled for December.

Moog's LEV96 sensoriactuator prototype wields touch control of 96 simulataneous harmonics, we go eyeson video

Late last week, Moog outed its LEV-96 sensoriactuator prototype and offered a glimpse at its latest R&D unit. Even though it's still in the early phases of beta-testing, we were able to stop by the Moog Music factory for a closer look and a brief glimpse of the gear in action ahead of its appearance at Moogfest. While the unit is installed on acoustic guitars for the time being, the company says that similar tech can be used on other acoustic instruments and eventually to other surfaces -- this is just the current manifestation. Since the tech modifies the guitar's natural harmonics and string vibrations, the LEV-96 is getting cozy on both traditional acoustic guitars and those outfitted with pickups in its present state.

As far as controls go, the entire unit is capacitive touch-enabled from the moment a finger swipe powers it on. Sliders allow for adjusting the intensity, harmonics and note duration while the other buttons enable arpeggio presets and modulation that includes tremolo and random harmonic tweaks. Those sliders remain in play when a preset is activated, serving to enable further adjustments on selected There is a lock button, too, so that you don't accidentally make a switch mid-strum. All of these finger-friendly surfaces work alongside two pairs of electromagnetic pickup channels per string to wrangle the 96 simultaneous harmonics. Magnets work to either increase of decrease the string's motion, bringing out vibrational modes that have always been in-play on acoustic instruments, but have never been offered the power needed to make 'em sing. The folks at Moog are quick to remind us that the LEV-96 is still in its infancy, but you can rest assured we'll be keeping an eye our for what develops. For a peek at the tech in action, head on past the break for a really quick demo that we kept brief due to that fact that this is an early prototype.

(AP) ? A surfer was killed Tuesday by a shark off a beach at coastal Vandenberg Air Force Base following a summer of shark sightings along California's Central Coast, authorities said.

Francisco Javier Solorio Jr., 39, of Orcutt was killed in the attack off the coast of Surf Beach in Lompoc, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department said in a statement.

He was bitten by the shark in his upper torso.

Solorio "had a friend who he was surfing with who saw the shark bite or hit the man," said sheriff's Sgt. Mark A. Williams. "His friend ended up swimming over and pulling him from the water where he received first aid."

The friend started first aid while another surfer called for help, but Solorio was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.

The Air Force said he was not affiliated with the base, which allows public access to some of its beaches. All beaches on the base's coastline will be closed for at least 72 hours, as a precaution, Col. Nina Armagno said Tuesday evening.

The type of shark involved and other details were under investigation.

It was the latest shark attack fatality at Surf Beach, about 150 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

In October 2010, Lucas Ransom, a 19-year-old student at the University of California, Santa Barbara, died when a shark nearly severed his leg as he body-boarded.

Hundreds of miles south near the coast of San Diego, a 15-foot great white shark is believed to have killed triathlete David Martin in 2008.

There were no shark warning signs posted at Surf Beach on Tuesday, said Lt. Erik Raney, adding that beaches don't typically post such notices unless the location had a recent shark sighting.

"We've had shark sightings up and down the Santa Barbara coastline pretty frequently recently," said Raney, adding that the sightings are well-publicized.

Last month, warning signs were posted at Santa Barbara Harbor, about 65 miles southeast of Surf Beach, after a 14-foot great white shark was spotted by a surfer.

In July, a man escaped injury near Santa Cruz after being thrown from his kayak by a great white shark that bit through the vessel. An almost identical incident occurred off the coast of Cambria in May.

Death by shark attack is rare. An average of 65 shark attacks occur each year around the world that typically result in two or three deaths, according to the Pew Environment Group.
