Cog Hill's Dubsdread honored among America's best by Golf Digest

LEMONT, Ill. -- Golf Digest recently released its 2013-14 ranking of America's 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses. Cog Hill's Dubsdread is the only public course in Illinois to be ranked on this prestigious list. Dubsdread is ranked No. 64.

"My father always wanted to provide a private golf experience to the golfing public," said Frank Jemsek, CEO and Owner, Cog Hill Golf and Country Club. "He wanted to offer a golf course to rival the top country clubs in Chicago and one day host a U.S. Open or PGA Championship. He asked Dick Wilson and Joe Lee to build the course and when Dubsdread opened in 1964, it was the nation's only true championship-quality course for public golfers, raising the standard for public golf in the country."

Golf Digest also released the Best In State rankings, which ranks all the courses in the state - private and public. Dubsdread was No. 12 on the list.

"It is difficult to keep your national ranking because of all the new course construction over the last two decades," said Jemsek. "But providing the best public golf in Chicago has been and will continue to be our top priority and we appreciate Golf Digest recognizing Cog Hill as the best on the national and state level."

The Dick Wilson- and Joe Lee-designed golf course has been nationally ranked since it opened in 1964. A natural style championship golf course, Dubsdread's layout places a demand on shot making with tight landing areas combined with heavily bunkered, large undulating greens. The par-72, 7600 yard course underwent a comprehensive renovation in 2008 by renowned golf course architect Rees Jones. The routing remained the same, but every hole underwent renovation from tee to green to restore the original design integrity and overall character inherent in the work of Wilson and Lee.

Over the years, many national championships have been contested at Cog Hill, including four USGA Championships. In 1991, the Western Golf Association brought the PGA Tour's Western Open to Cog Hill and in 2007 the tournament was renamed the BMW Championship and was been played at Dubsdread in 2007, 2009-11.
