Caroline Kennedy confirmed as Japan ambassador

Washington (AFP) - The US Senate approved Caroline Kennedy, the sole surviving child of slain president John F. Kennedy and an early supporter of President Barack Obama, to be ambassador to Japan.

On a hectic day in which the US Congress voted to end a government shutdown, the Senate gave the final nod to Kennedy and 22 other nominees unanimously without roll call votes.

Kennedy, who was days away from her sixth birthday when her father was assassinated 50 years ago next month, will step into the most public role of her adult life after largely shying away from the family profession of politics.

The former first daughter encountered no opposition at her confirmation hearing last month before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, where she read well-rehearsed lines on US government policy toward Japan and voiced excitement at nurturing relations with the longstanding ally.

Kennedy had told the hearing that her father, who was seriously wounded by a Japanese destroyer in World War II, had hoped to pay the first US state visit to Tokyo. With his assassination, the trip was not carried out until 1974 when Gerald Ford visited.

"I would be humbled to carry forward his legacy in a small way and represent the powerful bonds that unite our two democratic societies," Kennedy told the committee.

Kennedy said that she also hoped to highlight her role as the first female US ambassador to Japan, which consistently ranks lower than other wealthy nations in women's empowerment in politics and business.

Kennedy's nomination has been hailed in Japan, although several US experts have voiced concern at having a diplomatic novice in Tokyo at a time of high tensions between the close ally and a rising China.

With her parents and brother all dead, Kennedy has championed her family's brand of progressive politics while generally preferring to stay out of the limelight.

But Kennedy played a pivotal role in her Democratic Party's primary in 2008 when she was an early and vocal backer of Obama against perceived front-runner Hillary Clinton.

Among other nominees, the Senate approved Nisha Desai Biswal to be the assistant secretary of state for South and Central Asian affairs. The former development official will be the first American of South Asian heritage to hold the position.

GOP Establisment & Tea Party Need to Learn to Get Along

Anyone hear anything from the centrist-talking Democrat Leadership Council anymore? No, you don't. The Democrats purged most of its centrists, chiefly by staking out positions so far to the Left (such as voting for the monstrosity of ObamaCare) that all of its representatives from purple districts were kicked out of office in 2010. The Republican Establishment is, as one might guess, conservative by temperament. It resists change, moreso than the the Democrat Establishment (which almost seemed eager to confess they were fully Men and Women of the Unreconstructed Left; they just needed an excuse to say so). The only way this marriage can be saved -- if it can be at all -- is for the Establishment to stop fighting the Tea Party on everything, and instead begin plotting politically-savvy ways to forward the Tea Party's way of thinking.

A Georgia woman died just one day after seeing her three daughters get married.

Becky Swales had been battling breast cancer, according to ABC News affiliate KGO-TV in San Francisco.

Swales’ daughters Jodie, Sarah and Kaylie Swales, of Georgia, had raised money from the local community in Snellville so that they could have all three of their weddings on the same day with their mother in attendance.

Each of the sisters walked down the aisle with their father on Sunday. Their mother was in the front row. During the event all three went up to her at the same time in their wedding dresses.

“It’s kind of bittersweet because we’re happy she’s here, but we’re sad because it’s probably going to be the last big thing we do with her,” Jodie Swales said.

Swales passed away the day after the weddings, she age 43.

Jodie Swales took to her Facebook after her mother died and called her mother “the most beautiful person” and an “angel.”

“I know she’s watching me and my family and I’m gonna [sic] give her a life that she’d be proud to watch,” wrote Jodie Swales. “Thank you God for letting her be here for the wedding yesterday. I love you bigga [sic] bunches mommy. R.I.P.”

Salesforce today is making its identity and access management service, known as Identity, generally available. U.S. House fails to produce plan to avoid default, to try Wednesday

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Republican-led U.S. House of Representatives has failed so far to produce a plan to lift the threat of a government default and has abandoned plans to vote on any measure on Tuesday.

Representative Pete Sessions, a senior House Republican, emerged from a meeting in House Speaker John Boehner's office telling reporters Republicans would try to come up with a new plan on Wednesday.

With the U.S. government facing a Thursday default deadline, Boehner tried twice on Tuesday to move a debt limit and government funding bill to the House floor for passage but failed to get enough support.
